Hi everyone,
Today I just picked up my very first Yamaha. It's a 1982 maxim 650 that I paid 600 bucks for. It has a new back tire, new front and rear brakes a month ago, and it only has 15,000 miles.
The bad-
It needs the intake boots replaced because the ones on it have a lot of cracks. What should I expect to pay for four new ones?
The choke needs to always be on slightly, but I suspect this might be due to the intake boots, and possibly needing a carb cleaning.
The last problem is two broken studs. I'm not sure what they are called. They hold the exhaust flange in place. Those I will need to have drilled out. The previous owner never bothered to fix them. I'll be fixing that soon because I don't care for listening to the exhaust flange bouncing around on the header pipe.
I'm use to riding around on Honda CB models from the early 80's, so this one will take me a bit to get use to.

Welcome. The prices have gone up on the boots lately, but you might get lucky. There is a patch method using silicone and covering with sections of bicycle inner tubes. Can you trust the PO's word on the brakes? The studs can be a PITA. Look in the threads, I sure there is a write up on how to do it. I had a 81 CB750, I like my Max better.

Just from looking tonight I've seen them for right around 100 bucks for all four of them. I'd rather get new ones then try and repair the ones on there. The way my luck goes at times that is the best option for me.
A friend of mine has a family member that works at the shop the guy had the brakes done at. I also got to see the paperwork for the work done. I probably would not of believed him if it wasn't for the paperwork and someone else from that shop telling me.
Those studs are broke off flush, so I know it will be a real fun job. I wish each one had enough left where I could weld on a piece to get a wrench around.
I've had 2 1980 cb650's, and 1 1983 cb750. The weirdest thing to me is being able to hop on this maxim and go right away. Every CB I've owned needed a min or two to warm up.

Since those studs have already broken, and the intake bolts are likely to break, I would just plan on taking the whole head off and to a machine shop to remove any/all the broken studs and intake bolts. Then fit your new boots.

I'm thinking of doing that. I made a couple calls today and was given quotes from 200-500 dollars. This was to have them remove all the studs.

Try putting a washer around where the stud is and welding that. Then keep welding washers on till you have a good enough shank and then weld a nut on. Then try that. I think this is a Rick-o-matic trick if I recall correctly.

I went away for the weekend, and let the broken studs soak. I took a rubber glove filled it part way with mystery oil, and sealed it around the area of the broken stud with plumbing caulk.
I got back today and was able to use a small left hand drill bit and got one to pop out. The other one might need the welding trick done to it. I thought this was going to be a lot harder to do then it has turned out to be.

if you're not in a hurry, soak it again and/or apply moderate heat

I'm going to soak it again for a couple days then try again to get it out. If it doesn't work then I'll either bring the bike somewhere or find a welder to borrow.

Boots will be about $200 bucks for a set of four if they're the head-side boots. (Where I am, 'intake boots' refers to air intake for carbs, not head intake of the mixture post-carbs... confusing ambiguity). The other side don't seem to be so expensive, but I'm not sure.
You'll need to do a carb cleaning, considering the state it's in it's almost a guarantee it hasn't been maintained before you. Do it while you have the head off if you go that route, they're a PITA to remove with the head on in my experience...

They are the header side boots. I hear so many call them by different names that I don't even know the proper term for them anymore. All the small shops around here call them intake boots, so that could be why I stick with that term for them.
I plan on rebuilding the carbs. I know they need it, and it gives me a reason to crack open a set of CV carbs, and see how different those are to rebuild compared to mechanical ones.
I have not owned a bike yet where the carbs are not a PITA to remove, and get back on. The one cb650 I own gets it's carbs removed yearly. I can get them off that bike now in under 20 min, but it still takes an hour to get them back on the bike properly.
