Front Wheel Speedometer Drive Assembly Components:

Your speedometer is driven off a drive unit mounted onto the left outer side of the wheel hub, and consists of the CLUTCH unit, the clutch RETAINER, and the large GEAR DRIVE UNIT. Although most non-functioning speedometers can be traced to more common sources of failure (the speedometer head itself, or more likely the speedometer drive cable), we offer these replacement drive units should the need arise.

WHEELS AND TIRES:

Unlike with automotive wheels and tires, there's no really good reasons why you can't do as good a job of changing tires and balancing your wheel/tire combo as a shop can. Although all the fancy tire dis-mount - mount machinery and spin-balancers are very impressive looking, they also add quite a bit of cost to the process (call around in your local area for pricing and you'll see what I mean!).

By spending some labor time and effort yourself (for wheel removal and tire dis-mount and re-mounting; those are the big consumer of your time), the money you can save can easily pay for the cost of upgrading to some much nicer, high-quality tires, which is where the true safety and performance gains can be realized. NOTE: If you feel unqualified in performing such actions, then by all means don't attempt these taks yourself; however, if you can follow instructions and are have the patience and skills needed to do things correctly, then these tasks----and savings----are certainly achievable, even if it's your first time.

The most-used cables are obviously at the greatest risk, and the pecking order goes like this:

a) tach/speedo cable
b) clutch cable
c) throttle cable
d) brake cable---750 Seca models
e) choke cable

Throttle and clutch cables will leave you basically stranded, while the others you can continue on down the road even if they fail........but why take that risk? Inspect your cable regularly, and lubricate them religously! And don't be afraid to have a spare set of those critical cables on-hand as "cheap insurance" for that time when the inevitable happens!

NOTE: we strongly suggest that you throroughly LUBRICATE your new cables before installation!

Clutch Cables:

cac5) OEM and aftermarket CLUTCH CABLE, brand new with coil-wound black-sheathed housings, inner nylon sleeve, and correct ends to correctly replace snapped, frayed, or noisy originals. NOTE: the overall length of aftermarket cables may differ by 1-2" (total overall length) from original, but this can easily be compensated for in the routing and final adjustment of the cable once installed.

NOTE: All original OEM cables come with a non-removable, non-replacable nylon or teflon bushing installed on the clutch cable lever end barrel or "bullet"........and this bushing is installed BEFORE the barrel (or bullet) is crimped onto the cable and although it is slotted, the slots do not go to the outer edge of the bushing, and thus there is no way to remove the bushing (nor install a new one).

All aftermarket cables use a larger diameter barrel (or "bullet") on the clutch cables that matches the the O.D. size of the original sleeved bullet.....and thus no nylon sleeve is necessary nor used. We've never heard of a problem with these aftermarket cable ends binding or seizing up, although I suppose that without periodic lubrication, that is a possibility.

NOTE: your clutch lever should have 2-3mm of free play (at the lever) when the clutch cable is properly adjusted.

Brake Hand Levers:

hl9) OEM and aftermarket BRAKE HAND LEVERS perfectly replace the factory original aluminum handles. Although most handle levers LOOK the same, they actually are different bike-to-bike, as the bend angle and offsets to clear other handlebar features, control switches, etc. take into account such things.

OEM replacement levers normally have a rough-texture finish to promote hand grip (originals were smooth) and come in either the correct low-gloss-black or polished finish (depending on model).

Aftermarket levers faithfully reproduce the designs of the originals, and are available in a variety of finishes.

NOTE: the brake hand levers used on all XJ550 Maxim, 1982-83 XJ550 Seca, and all XJ650 Maxim and Midnight Maxim models originally used a plastic spacer bushing to take up the large difference between the lever hole inside diameter and the pivot bolt shoulder outer diameter (all other models have a lever hole ID and pivot bolt shoulder OD that is a close enough tolerance so that no bushing was ever used nor required). Both the original OEM replacement and the aftermarket levers listed below will also require the use of a spacer bearing for proper fit and operation.

Clutch Hand Levers:

hl1) OEM and aftermarket CLUTCH HAND LEVERS perfectly replace the factory original aluminum handles. Although most handle levers LOOK the same, they actually are different bike-to-bike, as the bend angle and offsets to clear other handlebar features, control switches, etc. take into account such things.

OEM replacement levers normally have a rough-texture finish to promote hand grip (originals were smooth) and come in either the correct low-gloss-black or polished finish (depending on model).

Aftermarket levers faithfully reproduce the designs of the originals, and are available in a variety of finishes, as well as having more pronounced "finger grip" scallops on the front side of the lever than the original levers do.

Clutch Hand Lever Safety Switch:

hl18) OEM clutch lever SAFETY SWITCH pops into the clutch lever holder bracket and comes with the correctly colored wire harness leads and connector.

NOTE: except on the XJ750 Seca and XJ900RK models, the removal of these switches from the housing seems like a trick Chinese puzzle, until you figure it out.....there is small, round hole (about 2mm diameter) on the forward side of the housing where this switch plugs in. Using a small screwdriver or other such object, gently push in through this hole onto the plastic "tooth" that is part of the switch housing, while also pulling back on the switch. Releasing this ratchet tooth will release the switch from the housing, and out it comes!

Side Cover Mounting Hardware:

bp2) OEM body side cover panel rubber MOUNTING GROMMETS, BUMPERS, and PADS. These come in a variety of sizes and shapes for different models, and all of them allow the side cover panels to be properly mounted to the bike frame or prevent vibration. GROMMETS normally fit into an open, c-shaped mounting "ear" on the side panel, or onto the bike frame via a double-lip and accept a pointed mounting "peg" molded into the side panel. BUMPERS normally push into a round hole in the side cover, and have a small "tail" that cinches tight once pushed through the hole. PADS are thin, flat insulators that are attached onto the side panel. NOTE: some grommets also have a small, mushroom-shaped metal collar that fits within the grommet and provides extra stability and rigidity to the grommet once installed.

SEATS AND SEAT COVERS:

Original and reproduction seat parts allow you to restore one of the most important parts of your entire bike: where your butt is placed! There's nothing worse than a worn, torn, faded, destroyed, ill-fitting seat to inspire ridicule amongst friends and to make your bike look old.

Although the replacement of a SEAT COVER is not a mechanically difficult task, the proper building or rebuilding of the underlying foam support IS an important factor in terms of comfort, fit, support, and durability of finished product. For this reason, unless you have experience in this area, we suggest you allow an experienced upholstery shop perform the installation for you.

By thw way, since many people are curious, our experience shows us that without a LOT of effort, neither seat covers nor seat pans are interchangable between different XJ model (for example, neither an XJ650 Maxim seat cover nor the complete seat will fit onto an XJ750 Maxim model). The seat panes are too different and have very different attaching points, brackets, and shapes to make interchange between models anything even approcahing "a simple swap".

REAR VIEW MIRRORS:

bp7) OEM and aftermarket rear-view MIRRORS, complete units include the mirror head and the support stalk with threaded ends and adjuster nuts (no stalk or adjuster nut on 650 Turbo mirrors, of course!). All stalked mirrors feature the correct reverse-thread on the right side mirror to screw directly into the factory mirror mounts. Crystal-clear glass restores vision while retaining that factory original look.

NOTE: please note that all stock Yamaha mirrors use reverse (left-handed) threads on the right-side mirror post and also in the master cylinder mirror post mounting hole......so these tighten counter-clockwise (reverse from normal)......and ONLY yamaha uses these reverse-thread mirrors. So if you are trying to fit mirrors from or for any other model bike they will not thread into the master cylinder's threaded mirror mounting hole.

The left side mirror threads are standard right-hand threads, as are the threads in the clutch lever holder bracket.

Please note that XJ750 Seca models accept the mirror mounting post into the left or right side control switch housings (rather than the master cylinder or a separate clutch lever bracket).......but they, like all other Yamaha mirrors, feature that "reverse-thread" pattern on the right side mirror post.
