I decided I couldn't wait and ordered; it came in today's mail, and I'm I glad I got it! I can quit searching for that owners manual on eBay at a decent price for one thing...

I'm sending away for the CD today. Now if the weather would just help me out around the Pacific NW, I might get it fired up!

The final bugs have been solved. Version 4 is now ready and the distribution process has started.
Classic Mac OS users please note:
XRef requires Java Runtime 1.4.2 or higher.
Unfortunately, Apple is not supporting Java past version 1.1 on their classic operating systems like OS 8 and OS9, so XRef is not compatible with those systems. We are working on development of a classic-Mac compatible version and will release an update if we are successful. (This applies to XRef ONLY, the rest of the CD is fully compatible with all flavours of the various Mac operating systems.)
Mac OSX users require no action - OSX comes with Java extensions built right in. Java Runtime 1.5 is included on the XJCD volume 3 in the Java folder for Windows and Linux/Unix users.
Win9x/NT/ME/XP, Mac, Linux/Unix compatibility has been tested. Even Win95 Rev. B seems compatible if long filename support is enabled. Firefox, IE, Netscape, Safari and Mozilla browsers were all tested with their appropriate operating systems. Adobe Acrobat Reader 3 or higher is required.
New for version 4
- expanded coverage of Diversion models
- expanded coverage of Police models
- expanded coverage of Injection model
- expanded coverage of the 750J Maxim
- improved resolution for many other models
- all-new XRef -- the parts cross-reference database. (Java application)
- new ads and articles
- many more tips and tricks
So much information, it is now a 3 volume set!
Ok, so what is XRef anyway?
XRef is our parts cross-reference database. It includes all parts used in all Yamaha models sold in the US from 1972 up to 2005. It has an "XJ-ify" feature to limit display to XJ models only. You can search by part number, description, model, or displayed page. Clicking on a bike will bring up all parts used on that bike, arranged by parts diagram page. Clicking on a part will bring up ALL bikes that use that part AND (this is the really good bit) ALL bikes that used a compatible superseded part number or superseding part number -- yes, you read that right, the listing is recursive and follows the chain. Sometimes Yamaha makes a slight design change or switches suppliers, giving the new part a new number. That part may be used on a Virago or Fazer or Venture. Or sometimes an XJ part was originally designed for an XS or YZ model. So if you are searching for a discontinued part, you can print out a list of potential donor bikes that you can take to the wreckers with you.
XRef is exclusive to the XJCD. It is not the database sold commercially for US$25. It was developed by and for members of this list (and the XJ community at large) and, In Our Humble Opinion, offers far greater ease of use and functionality than any similar endeavour.
XRef is not complete. This is only phase 1. Once we get a version working for the classic Mac users, we intend to design a user input interface to allow you, the XJ community, to expand the database to include models not sold in the US (Phase 2). Users will be able to enter part numbers from any parts diagram on the XJCD (or other sources) one page at a time and after independent verification to guard against typos, an update to the database will be provided to all.
This was a massive undertaking, more than could be accomplished by any one person.
On behalf of the XJCD team, I want to thank all the members of the XJ
community whose contributions have made this possible. Many of you have donated or loaned materials, alerted us to rare finds on eBay and spent hours testing. This would not be possible without all of you.
Ordering information is available at members.tripod.com/dav...k/id47.htm Dave will be updating the page shortly with the new information.

Since the web site still says v.4 is in Beta (I know you said the updates were coming) - if I order through the web page, do I need to specify I'd like v.4? Also, do the distributers accept PayPal, or do I physically have to break out the checkbook?
Sounds like a cool resource. BTW, is there any 'upgrade' pricing for future editions if I buy one now?

In spite of our testing program, we have discovered a small bug. This only affects some versions of Mac OSX, and prevents running of the XRef database utility. It's an easy fix, and I am sending out replacement masters to Brad and Dave today. I've asked them to hold off shipping until they get the replacement. If you already got a copy from me, and if you will be (or may be!) using the CD on a Mac OSX machine, please contact me by e-mail for a free replacement of volume 3.
The affected disks are labelled as "v4.0.2". The replacements will be labelled "v4.0.3". If you are running this from your hard drive, I can e-mail you a small replacement file that you can copy over the existing file for immediate use.
Details for the technically minded: When clicking on XRef.html certain versions of OSX will select the classic Mac OS file instead of the file intended for OSX. The update will just have one file for all flavours of Mac to avoid further confusion.

PS: Secaman: I just spent all day yesterday packaging XJOG tee shirts. If I even hear the word tee shirt again, I will probably go postal.
Oblivion: At CDN$12 a pop, you are getting the whole thing at an 'upgrade' price! Bear in mind that we are aiming for a 0 profit level, and we tend to be pretty close to that target. By the time we purchase materials and information and pay the distribution costs, there's nothing left over. In fact, the last version lost money. If we get a workable classic Mac OS version going, before we have aquired enough stuff for a new version, we may offer a reduced price on a single-disk upgrade for those users. When we get Phase 2 going, the intent is that updates to the database itself will be available for free download and included with future revisions to the XJCD itself.

Dwayne,
Sounds like a decent plan. I was asking as much about saving resources (not having to reship discs w/ a lot of duplicate info, etc.) as being a cheepskate. Especially if I was too soon for v4 and wanted to get v3 right away with the intention of 'upgrading.' Since v4 is here, that part of the question was pretty mcuh dead from my point of view. The price is certainly fair if the product is as good as everyone says it is (I dropped a check in the mail late last week sometime, so I haven't seen it yet). I just look at the pile of old RedHat Linux CDs I have sitting around and think of what a waste it is/was to have all of those pressed, printed, and sent to me.
I REALLY like the downloading idea, not just for updates, but even if the full .iso was downloadable, you could save on media, packing materials and shipping costs. Granted, then you'd need to look at bandwidth costs, but if you're really going for 0 profit there are a few ways to surmount the bandwidth issue. But I'm sure you've at least considered these options. None of this is meant as cirticism in any way. I'm just thinking out loud here.
Thanks for the update. Even though I don't run OSX, it's good to know the product is well-supported.
