It's an '81 Maxim 650 and I cant locate the YCIS ports on the head. I was under the impression (blame haynes) that all XJ's except for a few british models had YCIS.
wrong?

You are right - the 80 and 81 maxim 650s did not have YICS
I first learned about YICS when I went to look at a 82 650 parts bike. Sadly that bike was beyond repair or use as a parts bike...

Nope. The "80 & '81 650's were non-YICS. So relax and cancel that YICS tool order and spend the money on a Colortune plug!

Even my '82 Seca is non YICS. It was originally from Canada so I guess it falls into the category of the Brit bikes.
Doesn't seem to slow me down!

Yes, it will be emblazoned on the covers near the shift and brake foot levers. Like this one:

I am not familiar with any YICS equipped bikes that do not say so on the bike somewhere.
I'm curious now, though. In the linked picture from my previous post, go straight up from the "S" in YICS. There is a bolt head that looks a little out of place, just below the head - that's the YICS passage. Does your bike have that bolt?

One of our great members posted a picture with the YICS ports clearly circled in RED. Who it was and the name of the post is not something I remember but you probably can find it if you look up YICS port in our forum search.

My 83 650 Seca Isn't YCIS either.
I think all the Canadian bikes are on the British model... Mine has an Oil Cooler AND Non-YCIS motor... I think those are the British (Canadian) differences (?).
So, Yeah, if YCIS isn't written on the case, and your bike is from Canada or the UK... Or you don't have an extra bolt head horizontally - half way up your motor - sticking out... Then just sync em normally!
