Hello,
I just hooked up on an 81 MAXIMA XJ650.
Has some sort of electrical problem. very weak spark and will not start alot of the time. The guy I got it from hsd replsced the coils and the ignitor box. runs sometimes won't start at others. Replaced the fuses under the seat with the new style fuses. The old ones were loose in the connectors tried to tighten them and several just gave up and broke. The bike only has 3,636 miles on it and it looks like it has been garage kept!

Any ideas?
If this is posted in the wrong section could someone link it to e=where it schould be.
Thanks in advance for any and all help!

I just bought a 82 Maxim 650 and after about 100 miles in 2 days I LOVE IT!
Can anyone give me some info on how this bike should be running and sounding if it's in good condition though? I think it runs fine since it barely tops out at 5000rpm at abt 60mph but it does have a slight whine to it when I am accelerating. I don't notice it so much at high speed but then the wind is whipping by pretty good then too. Also kinda clunky through 1st, 2nd, and even 3rd gear sometimes.
Also, complete newbie rider question but, what should the tach be reading (average) at the various speeds.

Was given this basket-case Maxim-X by my cousin 2 years ago. I'm ba**s deep into chopping it. It's been totally stripped down to the frame, sandblasted and repainted metallic black (the frame). I've chromed mny parts already and have just installed an AME engineered raked triple tree (not cheap for sure). Should be all finished and on the road next Spring.
I still need a number of parts (seat, forward controls, exhaust system) and am searching eBay and local shops in Halifax for stuff. Will post some before, during, and after pics soon.

Last year I bought an '85 XJ700X for $414.80 from a finance company. It was collateral on a loan that the borrower defaulted on. I dragged my feet about fixing it up while I went through Paramedic school, but the price of gas has finally made me order the mufflers and cones needed to get it on the road again. I might've preferred a smaller bike, but I think I'm really going to enjoy this one.

Confused for a yz 490, which i must say was an awsome bike as well, and had lots of good times on it!!!!...but over the years i had always regretted makeing that move. Bike will start, but revs up high while on choke, then dies when off when off. Like a stuck cable (is not stuck) or manifold air leak (which could be, but only tiny if at all). I did take out jets in vacuum chamber of carbs to clean, I believe a 50 and a 190 (or something like that). I have an 82 Maxim XJ650 that I picked up about three months ago. After putting about four thousand miles on it I've gotta say I'm impressed by how well a thirty year old bike is holding up!

I bought a 1982 Maxim 550 last fall as my getting out of the Army/30th birthday present to myself. She ran when I heard her with the previous owner over the phone, but hasn't ran since I picked her up last winter. Needless to say, I've got my work cut out for me with this winter project. Hellbent on getting her on the road for "our" 31st next year. Glad there's such a great resource like this community to help along the way.

My brother gave me an '81 XJ550 Maxim he originally bought for parts for his bike. Unfortunately, the parts he needed weren't compatible with his bike and tossed it my way since she's still in great shape. Just needs a little TLC and she'll be purring like sex on wheels by the time I'm done with her.

I've found myself in the possession of a 1982 XJ650 that's had a 750 engine dropped into it Very Happy . I've had only a little experience with bikes (rode when I was a teen, now in my 40s), and I'm looking for a maintenance and repair manual for what I can -- any suggestions? Question

Hey all, I have a 82 secs 750 and have owned it since new. It's was stolen a few yrs ago and got it back after a year of it being in the hands of someone who , after mangling the wiring , got it going and I assume raced at the local 1/4mile track(st Thomas ont.) I have now stripped the parts off and starting from scratch.
