XJ750 83 Circuit cutoff relay

Are the circut cutoff relays interchangeable with a standard automotive 4 pin relay or does it need to be the bloody expensive Yamaha part?

you can bypass the relay but it is there for a reason. jump the 2 red/white wires together

You must use the Yamaha relay.
Let's back up a bit though.
How do you know that the relay is faulty?

I was changing speedo and shorted a couple of wires. It blew a fuse however it looks like the neutral switch went aswell as now there's no neutral light. Testing the neutral switch shows no response. The relay is activating but I was looking at covering all bases just in case.
I've ordered a neutral switch and will probably get the relay just as a backup. Cheers.

 

it should work in gear with the clutch pulled in because of the clutch safety switch. if clutch safety switch is bad or removed the bike will only start in neutral so you may have 2 problems

 

Yeah, no clutch safety switch, just the neutral light.

 

this is the starter cutoff relay. jumping the 2 red/white wires together bypasses the cutoff relay. #12 is the clutch switch goes to ground through the starter button . tand the diode in the relay goes to the neutral switch #23


do not confuse it with the starter relay which is the solinoid

 

without the clutch safety switch installed the bike will only start in neutral.
you can put a jumper wire across the green connector in the headlight bucket then bike will start in gear. you should replace the clutch safety switch.

so if your neutral switch is bad and with out the clutch safety switch your SCR starter cutoff relay has no ground to make the relay close.
first temporary fix is the jumper across the clutch safety switch connector as stated above
second option and which is safer is to ground the wire that connects to the neutral switch this will give the SCR relay a ground to be able to close and allow you to start or operate the starter.

I would guess your relay is good

 

Yeah, I've bypassed the relay by bridging the red/white for the meantime. Just frustrating as I caused the problem! All good. If anything further happens I'll post in my bike thread. Cheers.
