IMHO, I wouldn't want to use clear coat. Too easy to maintain using a polisher/wax, like Mothers Aluminum Polish every 6 months or so by had. Main point to be aware of is not to use a silicon based wax. It will dull the newly buffed shine. Best to use a bees wax based wax. I think that is what the Mother's Aluminum polish contains along with the polishing component. The Mothers is the final step I use soley for its wax properties, since the part will already have the mirror shine after buffing. The Mothers polish/wax step will dull it just a tad. But hardly noticable. When doing a maintenance application every 6 months or so, you can always hit it wit a drill buffer after having done the hand polish/wax appliction. Keeps the look show quailty.

That's a handy tip. I used to wash my rims with a common dish washing detergent once a week to keep it from oxidation. To maintain a glass shine I had to buff it once a month.
