    hi from uk
    need some help

bike in dry storage for 2 years 27 000 mls
my xj650 uk 1982 bike i cant select any more than 2 gears which are ?? i have removed the clutch plates clutch drum still on the engine which is still in the frame

next i removed the engine side cover to have a look at the gears cant see any faults no broken pins or broken springs

as for the clutch drum on the engine it will not turn 360 deg just rocks back and forward which will be a greater or smaller movement depending on which gear it drops in to
so any help would be great

when i opened the gear box cover selectors in the position as shown in in the works shop manual the teeth locked in to each other and set parallel to the bottom of the casing

    Hi Mike,
I personally have not been inside an XJ clutch. After you reach 5 posts you can post a few pics to clarify what you described above. Someone here will be able to help you.

Suggest pull exhaust and drop oil pan, you may have a chain guide that has broke off chuncks jamming gears .

That hard rubber was part of a broken chain guide. You need to replace it, or plan on a very expensive oil jet being ruined.
You can ride the bike for a while with a broken guide, but not forever.
You now have a winter poject.
Split the case. replace the alternator chain guide, and rebuild the starter clutch.
