So, I'm bobbing out a 82 750 everything is going great so far, no major issues anyway. Except, the handlebars on this bike are hideous. I can't find any aftermarket bars that will fit the design of the head plate that they sit on. I'm wondering if anyone has found a way to fit different bars on this style of bike. Either using a different plate that still fits around the forks and the center knob or has anyone found handlebars that will fit the existing plate? I would like to explain the design of this but its tough to describe. Any help.would be fantastic. Thanks.

Use the upper triple tree from an 83' XJ750. In 83" Yamaha changed back to standard tube bars. With that upper, you can fir what ever style 7/8th tube bars you want provided they clear the tank.

I picked up a whole triple tree assemble for $39 shipped.

Don't mind the "midnight" part, thats just a special blacked out paint scheme, which i think the triple trees were all black anyway so it doesn't even make a difference. they look like they could use some new paint anyhow.

    Good luck!

Oh, and while you're at it, replace the headtube/steerer tube bearings with some modern tapered-style bearings since you'll have everything apart. if your stock bearings aren't notched yet, they soon will be. tapered bearings will be good for the rest of the bike and you'll never have to touch them again.

Email Len at info@xj4ever.com (without the spaces) and he'll get you the hook-up.

they are around 45.00 if i recall correctly.

Check out the link in my signature to see how this is done without tearing apart the whole triple tree. Takes about $15 and 15 minutes.

the buckhorn bars and the mounts are removable and new risers can be installed.

    see the assembly drawing

    part 17 in this drawing

also the 83 maxim uses regular bars if you used the top tree it should work for you. I do not know if it will interfer with the air nipples on the side of fork tubes

first you have 7/8 inch bars on an xj
what xj do you want to modify?

if you look in the xj4ever catalog you will see cable lengths and what will fit different bikes
XJ PARTS CATALOG, SECTION M: CONTROL CABLE AND HAND LEVERS

you can get custom made cables.

how tall depends on your states restrictions

are the current bars stock as well as the cables?
how long are the current cables?

    XJ700
choke cable stock Wire length = 35".
clutch cable stock Wire length = 47-1/2".
throttle cable stock Wire length = 39-1/2".

    from catalog
INTERCHANGE: most throttle cables (except 1984-85 FJ600, 1992-98 XJ600 Seca II, and XJ700 all models cables) will interchange with each other, as they mainly differ in their overall wire and sheathing length. When swapping handlebars, you may find the need to use a shorter or longer cable than original. The XJ650RJ Seca, XJ750 Seca, and XJ1100 cables have a narrower cable end barrel (1/4" wide vs. 5/16" wide for all other cables) which may present an issue on some interchanges. Additionally, all of the XJ550 model cables and all of the XJ650 model cables (except Turbo) use a bent metal tube end at the throttle, while all other models use a plastic tube with a thumb-screw adjuster.

the xj1100 are the longest cables

So the bars are stock bars. My state has no restrictions. I don’t want to buy new cables or extended cables. The bars and cables are bone stock. I just want to know how long I can stretch the original cables before they get tention

So if I got bars even just 1 inch taller and re routed the cables they couldn’t work? I assume because of the brake line but I can splice in an extension

Not much, Yamaha didn’t design them with slack in mind for different bars. It’s not as simple as two rise equals two inch longer cables. Depends on the pullback too and how the cables orient. When I swapped bars the stock throttle cable was fine because it exits underneath and points to the front. I had to shorten the clutch cable as it “points” a different way. Unless you can find a thread on here specific to your situation you will have to experiment.

So I noticed that all cables besides the hydrolic front break line had a whole bunch of slack and if I re routed them I’d have even more. I can splice in a longer price for the break line but I’m wondering if anybody has done taller bars with the original throttle power and clutch lines
