Well-- that pretty clearly tells you where to start then----

If You haven't replaced them, then it's a VERY good possibility that you have some vacuum less at some dried-out seals

Then address the boots.....slather them with black RTV so they are at least sealed for the time being. But if the high-revs continue, then you're either gonna be walking, talking a bus or cab, or coughing up the $ to get the carbs done the RIGHT way.

Any parts. I need ignition coils unless I can change my wires and not the coils. Carburetor rebuild kit, engine seal kit

I'd recommend doing it this way-

    1. Get a bicycle inner tube
    2. Cut 4 sections just the width of the intake boot
    3. Use a paper hole punch to create a hole for the vacuum port-- obviously measuring how far in from the edge you need to be....
    4. Slather the whole boot exterior with the rtv
    5. Slide the inner tube onto the boot to create a
    "Bandage"
    6. Do the other 3

Now, re-install the carbs and see if there's any difference.

And don't try to remove them from the head. Rarely do those bolts come out without breaking off in the head.

We get fixing up a bike cheaply to get around but there are some things you can't skimp on. These bikes are pushing 40 and if not maintained over the years you are looking at multiple areas for failure. Patch those up and see if things change. Reply with your results and we'll go from there.

As soon as I get bk on my feet. Literally speaking. Fathers Day about 2 a.m. I was shot with a .380 in my left leg. I'm going to continually work on replacing parts. My bike looks very very good well taken care of. I'm new to working on bikes or any mechanics foe that matter. I'm no dummy tho and this site is extremely helpful!!!

Good luck with the recovery. Here's some required reading for the XJ bikes.

    The Information Overload Hour

Chacal is your man for parts, click the upper right icon that shows an XJ motor for the catalog.
