Whether the tool is needed for a good synch is matter of debate on this site. Search the site and you will see some very knowledgeable XJer's on both sides.

Since I'm cheap, I synched without one using my homemade manometer. Bike idles very nicely and runs well.

I bought a tool off a guy here... But, I've done a really good sync without it.

OK, maybe I'll try without first then see... thx

I've also wondered if you can insert a rod that MOSTLY blocks everything just to make it closer to having a tool...

honestly, I sync'ed in the spring and I get a rock solid idle at 1200 rpm once it's warmed up. I've never cracked open the YICS passage. Maybe if I have to re-build the engine, I will ... someday.

if you open up the yics port make sure the little holes are clear.

If your tool is too small to fill the hole, there's not much point putting it in there.o_O

If you did that, you'd still have to ensure that the ends are sealed airtight or you'll really have problems. Just sync without it, most guys here do including the "experts"

Boy, that's great news I was about to build one from a design that a guy posted a while back on the xj forum.
It was made from a threaded rod a bunch of nuts, washers and rubber tubing. I use the Two bottle method.
Four to three, One to two, Two to three. It worked well on a 650 non YICS seca. Now hopefully it will work
on my YICS bikes without having to use a YICS tool.

I bought one and never used it. Still in original wrap :)

But I can borrow if you take over the shipping.
