That AVE fellow is a hoot. This is a pretty old trick, but one which I haven't (for some dumb reason) ever thought to apply to anything other than an emergency in-the-field repair.
No more waiting on the deep-freeze to do its work when installing new bearings.

I follow AVE all the time very smart man and funny as hell. I love the video of him pealing a potato on a lathe. Good to see a video in this thread!

Oh, as a guy who's just about to replace his steering head bearings, I'm trying both of these. Awesome!

I stick the steering stem in the freezer overnight, and heat the lower bearing. Drops right on, but a little extra cooling of the steering stem by shooting it with the propellant can be helpful.

Hence how both methods are going to be used - heat the lower bearing in the microwave, freeze the upper bearing before squeezing it in. AvE links the microwave trick at the end of the video above =)

The wet towel wrapping is particularly brilliant - I had no idea that would eliminate arcing. While a microwave can superheat water past 100c without boiling it, I'm pretty sure the water soaked towel surrounding a bearing will prevent that - the towel and the bearing itself should prevent that.

But yeah, I've got a bottle of the duster stuff and I've dealt with it's freezing things before, but never considered using it on bearings. I'm a huge fan of both techniques because they're usable immediately. I'm bad at forethought and planning =)
