These bikes are not cheap to work on.......alternative would have been to buy one already fixed up......but that is no fun........buying a barn find or cheap craigslist bike......you will soon learn to become a motorcycle mechanic real quick......great learning experience.......

Do not get discouraged.....this community is here to help you

not impossible to find. Can often source em on eBay, also there's a few wreckers who carry XJ parts.

An alternative is cleaning out the rust - not hard to do at all - and then having the tank welded. That method will be a bit more work, but is really not very challenging.

Having the tank welded will be way cheaper than replacing it.

A good idea to keep in mind is finding another of your year/model that's not running as a parts bike. You can often get non-running bikes for ~$150-300. In the long run, it can save you a lot of money... Particularly if you find one with a good tank.

Don't let want of a tank stop progress, though: until you get the tank sorted, you can set up a pop bottle based temporary fuel tank to use for tuning. This is useful beyond just being a stop-gap till you get a tank, as you'll need this to balance your carbs anyways.

    tank liner is an idea.
if you want to see if the motor turns take left side crank cover off and turn the square bolt ccw also remove the spark plugs

83 tank will work but no fuel guage
also check the tank swap thread for options
