Anything can be turboed. Not everything should be turboed. There will not be a kit. Parts for this bike will be hard to find as it is quite uncommon. The project will be difficult as not many have done it before. On the plus side, not many have done it before, so it would be one unique bike.

Just to run down a few things that change in the engine with a turbo car (and I've had quite a few):
    - lower compression since the intake is pressurized now
    - stronger connecting rods to take the bigger explosions (and maybe other internal changes to make things stronger)
    - different fueling, which could mean different carbs or at least different jetting
    - more cooling since we're producing more power from the same size engine, likely oil cooler, but maybe more

I've seen a number of turbo projects in the Audi and VW world, plus owned a number of Audi turbos (including my current A5)

I would suggest geting good at reading Japanese. All of the best info and parts will come from Japan, since it was never an official export bike.

Is you goal to build something different, or just to go faster?

It would be much easier to buy a Seca 650 turbo. Also much cheaper.

You will very likely destroy the inherent value of your bike by modifying it since it's a very rare bike there and it will be worth more dead stock but you can buy the tubing/turbo and build a box around your present carbs or swap out a FI system and build the bike. As you can tell from the responses above.....most would not invest the time, money & effort because at the end of the day, you will still have a 400cc bike running nears it's destructive testing stress limits. It certainly would work but use a boost controller to keep the overall boost down to 7-9psi to limit the possibility of fragging your engine.

Have you ridden the bike without turbo? Is it too slow?

Restore the 400 to bone stock, then use the value of that to get a nice 650 or 750. Just my 2 cents. I can understand the desire to modify a bike to make it your own but I still think you'd be better off getting some more cc's and going from there. Especially since it sounds like you got the 400 for a song on price. Take it for what it's worth

Besides, you'll blow it up. Your engine isn't built for that....

You got a rare bike there.... don't irreversibly alter it

If you want more power, get a bigger xj. The engineers hit the xj formula just right, and were able to wring just about everything out of the engine design. You won't get enough bang for your buck. Leave it alone. Get a bigger bike for more power, and enjoy the rarity of this one---

Excellent bargain! About $355 or so US. A great bike to make a nice profit from....unless you told the seller of your plans to keep it...sometimes that can make selling it a uncomfortable path. Yeah, for the money, it will never be what you want it to be. You could NOS it much cheaper than turbo'ing it and you'd most likely end up with the same thing either way...a ragged out engine at best or sell that little gem and buy some size.
