I bought this 1983 xj550 was told its a "maxim", but it does not look like a maxim. do i have a seca? tried to look up the vin but all i have is the short version.. it is chain drive. the side cover says maxim but i'm not sure if it is original. i am looking for a carb jet kit for pods and exhaust. gonna re jet my first carb woo hoo!! is there a difference on the carbs? this is the first bike i have ever worked on, I know very little about it and I am not a rider, just like to tinker.

You just might want to hold on to the factory air box a little longer...

Okay first bike and now you want to put pods on  Please realize you will have to experiment with jetting and other issues , granted it is your project and your $$$ just saying if bike is running well now ..it won't be after you start this. I personally have SEEN this with friends that attempted 2 went back to stock airbox and 1 kept trying to get his Yamaha Seca 750 to run right ..he gave up and sold it he went Stage 1 and went to a Stage 2 kit never was right ( I had an 84 Kawasaki 550 LTD at the time ) Please also realize you need to fabricate some type of bracket to support the weight of the carbs , don't rely on the boots alone , with the airbox the carbs are supported on both sides , altering this the carb boots can crack over time . Well all I can add what Stumplifter stated keep the stock airbox Please don't cut it up and good luck.

And seca seat..... which that alone makes it obvious since the seat mounts are totally different between the two models..., seca tail cowl, seca gauge cluster, left side standing handle....

come on now.. if i can't tell if it's a maxim or seca, then OF COURSE i destroyed the air box and threw it away.. lol learning is fun!!! I can fab a bracket no problem to hold the carbs. my neighbour already gave me money to buy it so it will be gone and not my problem. it's just gonna end up sitting in his garage for years as he is an old man with no bike licence.
AND I found a 650 Turbo "only" 350km away from where i live that i am going to try and get.. I wont f*** with this air box tho.. if i can get it.
