Does anyone have the factory manual for the 1984 Xj750rl ?
Photo of specs would be perfect
Same basic fork as 900rk but with no air valves

84 has no anti dive and is a different fork, similar to xj900rk but no air.

in the end the fork oil you use is a personal choice to the rider how the front end responds to weight and travel load (luggage)
this is all the info I have on XJ900

Well crap.........changed mine just over 20 years ago and I am pretty sure I used 10W30 might have been 5W30.
I know it was whatever I had handy at the time.
Guess its due for a change again either way.

Well 10w30 may be ok because it will behave like 10 weight. Your original post said 30 that is too thick

The service supplement for XJ750RL specifies 10w-30. Is there anything I can do to tighten the forks up a little? I can just about totally collapse them just pushing down on the bars.

    How hard are you pushing?!
You might want to pull the springs and check their free-length.

I’ll check when I get home tomorrow.
I’m pushing pretty easy so I think that’s a good idea. I’m going on a group ride Sunday and I’ll see how the feel in the twisties.

    The supplement manual says:
SAE 10W30 Type SE Motor Oil: Oil Capacity (each fork)
    286 ± 4cm3 (10.1± 0.14 Imp oz, 9.67±0.14USoz)
Slowly pump forks up and down to distribute the oil after filling.

Fork oil is a better choice (every manufacturer I know of specifies 10W30 or straight 30 motor oil as being acceptable in damper-rod forks). You can mix it wth ATF (roughly equivalent to 5 weight fork oil) to reduce foaming and adjust the viscocity.

Most of the members have found that 15 weight fork oil is about right, but you'll want to play with that a bit depending on your weight, and the type of riding that you'll do.
