I am in need of a pick up coil for my 1980 Xj650. Does anyone know of a company that does reproduction parts, or is there an aftermarket system that someone knows about that will fit this bike? Thanks

Lots of used ones around. I'm sure I have one. Btw which Grand Forks, there's a few of them in North America.

Used ones should be okay, as long as they test at the right ohms, all measurements made at about 70-F:

    XJ650 models:

    Pick-up coils:
    1980-81 XJ650 Maxim and Midnight Maxim: 700 ohms +/- 20% = 560 ohms to 840 ohms acceptable range

Ok so here's the problem I am having.....

I originally thought I had a coil pack die out on me, I tested it and it failed. So I replaced them and now I have weak spark on cylinders 3 and 4. I then thought it was the ignitor, and talked to a guy and he said that they work or don't. He suggested I check the pick up. And the pick up tests out fine. So what could it be?

Define "weak spark", and if so, then the ignition coils would be the primary suspect, followed by the plug caps. And, of course, the spark plug(s). Have you checked to determine whether you have 12V at the coils (red/white wire)?

xj's are known for a weak spark.

when testing ignition coil you tested primary wires (small ones) then from end of spark plug wire to end of spark plug wire? sets are 1&4, 2&3.
did you test the spark plug caps? they unscrew from plug wires. maybe trim spark plug wires back a 1/4 inch to eliminate corrosion.

and how old are your spark plugs?
clean all connections in the ignition system

xj bikes are called wasted spark ignitions when plug 1 fires plug 4 also fires, top of compression stroke and top of exhaust stroke, same thing with 2&3 both fire at same time top of each stroke.
so a weak spark on 3 and 4 is indicitive of bad spark plug caps , bad spark plugs, corroded wire or plug wires are arcing out under tank take a look at night for light show.

and to finish of my ramble most important thing is a good fully charged battery weaker the battery weaker the spark battery goes lower than 10 volts when cranking bike will not start

Plugs are new barely an hour of run time, plug caps are 2 years old with only maybe 1,000 miles. Battery is fully charged. I know the wasted spark tech on the bike.

Plugs 1 and 2 are burning good. Plugs 3 and 4 are always wet. Absolutely no problems starting the bike. It idles just fine. Bike has no power on take off. It does have a 4 into 1 header.

you may have carb issues. have carbs been synced, mixture screws adjusted? when was the last time you cleaned the carbs?
    Valves in spec?
4 to 1 header is not a big deal

swap plugs to the other cylinders see if the problem follows plugs also if your plug wires are long enough swap them to the other cylinders 4 to 1 and 3 to 2 see if the problem follows the wires and caps.
do one test at a time

Yes carbs are synced, and screws were set. Carbs are apart right now, decided to clean them just for sh*take and giggles just to make sure. Bike runs worse when I swapped wires in that fashion.

Could a grounding issue be the a problem?

you could have bad spark plug wires spark leaking out insulation to frame would explain why worse when crossed across frame and motor.

a bad battery ground or frame ground would not just affect just 1/2 of each coil pack.
do carbs look clean , wet plugs would be a rich condition but could also be caused by plugs not firing
