My opinion is sport/touring. kind of middle of the road.

The Maxim as a cruiser. The SECA....a sport/tourer?

I'd say they're all "standard" (aside from the seca II of course) with the maxim leaning on the cruiser side, and the seca more toward the sport.

And if you wanted to class the individual owners bikes on this site... well head over to the mods section and see what you come up with. 8)

I wouldn't class the maxim as a cruiser, controls aren't forward enough.

I was just poking through the articles on the XJCD, and pretty much every single one of them refers to the XJs as a cruiser of some sort, whether "power" or "performance".

Yamaha "invented" the Sport Cruiser or Power Cruiser with the Maxims. Up until the Maxims came out, most cruisers had been twins (V or vertical) and somewhat underpowered. The Seca was considered a "sport" bike at the time, it's actually just a zooty "standard." In todays world, I guess it would be a "sport tourer." I kinda prefer "real motorcycle" as compared to "seamless tupperware rocket."

In reading some of the articles published in 1980 - 81, it appears that most of the major magazines like Cycle and Cycle World considered the Seca's as sport bikes. Of course this was before the category was redefined when Honda came out with the VFR Interceptors and Kawasaki came out with the Ninja. Now, considering the current performance level of sport bikes, and especially when talking to insurance companies, I consider my 550 Seca pretty much a standard motorcycle with slightly sporting tendencies.

I prefer the even more generic term: UJM

    Universal
    Japanese
    Motorcycle

It is whatever you want it to be, and will do the job happily!

the maxims are more cruiser in design and appearance (although i agree that i personally dont really think of them as cruisers because of the lack of forward controls)

The secas are more towards the sport touring side.

I agree with the UJM method though. =)

Well if they want me to consider my maxmi a cruiser they need to put a little more padding in the seat.
