    Hi Folks,
I'm assembling my forks, ('83, XJ750R), I want to be sure I put the oil seals in correctly. How can I tell the difference between heads or tails on the oils seals? I see one lip is tighter or smaller and tapers one way, should that be the down side?
    Thanks!
    Bill
P.S. I've allready searched the forums and can't find a direction on this.

the oil seal should have a spring like ring.
the side with the spring goes down into the lower leg.

Thanks, but these seals have a spring ring on both sides.

proto, you're right. the "sharp", tapered lip on the oil seal should point down, so it can scrape the oil off the fork tube as it slides past.

    Thank's Bro!
Maybe the taper helps hold the air pressure too.

I guess I'm still not getting this, my seal seems to have a sharp edge on both sides.. The only difference is that there's a large gap on one side and a small gap on the other.. the writing is on the side with the small gap.

Here's two pictures of the oil seal.. which one goes up?

Your top picture shows the bottom side of the seal (the side that should be facing down into the fork leg).

Or, in other words, the bottom picture shows the side that should be "UP".
