If it only needed lots of TLC and obvious updates ~$800. How much would you pay for it in need of repair and how much once it's been polished and made decent to ride? Are these bikes a little hard to find? I haven't seen too many.

    Here it is

How complete is it and can you get a compression test?

Personally I'd say $400 max and that's if it blows good numbers. Looks mightily grubby.

FJ1100/FJ1200 were awesome bikes; they're NOT pure sport bikes, more like sport-tourers. A bit heavy to be considered "pure sports" and they still had old-school 19" front wheels when everybody was going to 17s and 16s. You don't see a lot of them because there simply weren't a lot of motorcycles sold in 1983~84.

It's basically the next step from the XJs, LOTS of things in common; same shim over-bucket valves, etc. Yamaha was still selling XJs in other parts of the world in '84. Think of it as a 900 Seca on steroids.

The FJ1100 had a 16inch front wheel as did the early 1200's. The later 1200's from 1988 on had a 17inch front wheel.
Both bikes had a 16inch rear wheel.
The 19inch front wheel was on the XS1100.
They also have 16 valve heads and the XJ's had 8 valves, and the size of the shims is 25mm.
Whatever you pay for that bike in that condition expect to pay at least the same again in consumables, the most expensive bits being the mono shock and the linkage bearings.

I might go 5, IF it was complete and had excellent comp numbers.

One of these lives about 1/2 mile from me. Original owner with over 50K on the clock.

They are nice one properly put back into service. Expect that to run between $700 and $1100, depending on if it has a good tank, etc.

Personally I would put that bike in the $300-$500 range.
Is the motor free turning , or siezed? Running?
    Wiring good, or chopped?
    With title, and keys?
These will all move it towards the higher end.

You could expect to easily spend $1000 if not more to bring it back proper condition.

    Good points
Looks to be complete except lower fairing. No need to chase down a lot of missing parts.
No obvious signs of damage from accidents, or abuse.

    Bad points
    Non-original exhaust.
Needs full repaint, and graphics. (time consuming, and potential expensive)

Thanks guys. Great thoughtful responses as always.

    Here's what I know:

Title is in CO's hand and clear
CO states bike ran before being parked 6months ago
CO states he thinks it needs a battery and tune up to be good (we all know that list is way short)
CO states it was the fastest production motorcycle that year! (ha! gotta love marketing-fast but not that fast)

He is asking five bills, but I am sure I could talk him down to 4. The good is I can take a fresh battery and compression tester with me, the bad is I can't come up with a good enough excuse to add another bike to my stable. It will be an issue of-don't you have other bills? Why do you need another bike? Ouch!

My thoughts are that I know what will happen to this bike. It's sitting outside and winter is fast approaching. I could fix it and sell it in the spring for a decent return if all goes well and no big surprises crop up. Or keep it and find the money to fully restore it like the 550.

The good excuse. A bigger bike for more comfortable two up riding, and once you have it fixed up you can always sell it to get your money back out of it.

Tell the other half, that you plan on fixing it up for the offspring. Bringing a kid into the picture works great !! (that's kinda low though isn't it)

Dave I would seriously need to get busy to match your signature!

Thanks for the ideas guys, I am working up to the justifiable speech now, after all it's Christmas and it's a family gift! The two up is true, but less so for me as we both only add up to one offensive lineman. The reviews on this bike are quite good and no doubt the highway ride/control is far superior to a 550. I cleaned the garage today after climbing the roof to put up lights and wow look at all that space! There's even room for two more Yamaha's! Finally how could I ignore a Yamaha in distress? I'll keep you posted.

If you do decide to get it I have a chin spoiler for it I would sell. If you decide to pass I would like a shot at owning it. ..............

Not more then $300.00 if that.

After all, given enough time you can find outstanding
deals on craigslist. Like the 2 '85 goldwing interstates I
recently saw-one was in near perfect condition the other
was a complete and running bike in very good condition both for $1500.

Not each-both for $1500. he just needed to get rid of them because
his wife wanted them gone now (man I hate being broke lol).
