i want to remove the angle out of the exhaust. i run saddle bags and don't want to ruin them. i just don't have any clue on how to straighten them. i was looking at the mac 4 into 1 header but it still has the angle up muffler. any ideas guys pretty new to the site so any advice would be great. my bike is a 85 xj700n bought last season. i have replaced the rear brakes, final drive, fork seals, cleaned carbs with your guys tech tips great write up by the way. two new tires replaced by myself. is there anywhere in the cincinnati region to have the carbs synced? also the front forks seam soft even after i steped up too the 15w oil spring seemed pretty stiff had a good old time trying to get the fork cap bolts back on. pretty new to working on bikes. thanks guys in advance for the help.

You could get a set of shorter mufflers (harley sportster have been widely used here) that would slip on in stock location, and just have an elbow bent at a muffler shop to put between the stock locale and new mufflers.

The baffles are removable with a hole saw, lol. If it were me making the elbow, I would weld it solid to the muffler, then split the pipe like the factory muffler then use a clamp, I put a pair on a gs550 suzuki for a friend worked well no probs. With the baffle in they are not much louder than stock, but do sound healthier.

Thanks sounds like i have to pick up some mufflers. and find a exhaust shop. that will be like pulling teeth most likely. no one around me likes to do anything custom. thats a great plan with the slits. you don't happen to know if the front fork are supposed to be soft. seems a little to soft for me but could be that style thanks again for everthing.

am i going to have to lose the center stand? or can i make a pipe long anough to curve over the center stand arm. then put the shorty pipe on? or will this put the pipe to far back? not sure what size the sportster pipe are. do you know what diameter pipe i need to get made and the angle i need to get bent? thanks again.

You can keep your center stand no prob. It just so happens I am in the bussiness to custom make things as such. I have a set of sporty pipes on the shelf in the garage, I would selll. I will pull them out see what the sizes are, length, etc. If I have that small of exhaust pipe on my rack I could fab the angle pipe, too. But that would be hard to do as the only access I have to an xj has a 4-1.

You should try to slip a muffler off and measure it up to see what dia. it is, unless anybody knows off hand here?

i will try to get the muffler off tomorrow and get the measurement. all i have is a tape measure will that be good anough measurement i would think down to a the sixteenth would be. are your pipe the standard chrome. i might be interested. i could probably sketch out the pipe with some measurements if i can't find some one local. what are you looking to get out of the pipes i might be able to pick them up local. what years had the slip ons. my brother inlaw rides a 883 sportster but his pipes are one piece from what i can see will have to look at them a little harder. he has chopped it up pretty good. so it might be custom. when i see it again.

There are some cheap jc Whitney mufflers someone used last year that needed little to no mods. Some models bent down or out.

A pair of sporty mufflers go for 20 bucks at a swap meet, guess I'm not sure what shipping would be. They are chrome, and pretty heavy. Some hardleys have a crossover pipe, those muffs won't work, I think it is something like 2003 and older are the ones you want.

Forgot about jc whitney, a guy could look in j&p, or dennis kirk too.
