Has anyone partitioned off the collector box to work as a 2 to1? I'd like to try it so I could use the same box without having to run new plumbing and still put the new mufflers out in @ the same place. I was going to cut it down to the bolt hole between 2 and three, weld in a piece of 16 gauge, grind where I had to, and bolt her up. What say ye XJ elders?

Trying to understand this. Are you wanting to seal off 1 of the pipes after the collector to make a 4 into 1 setup or are you wanting to seal off the collector to make 2 independent 2 into 1 setup?

I want to seal off the collector box in the middle for a separate 2 to one. One pipe, each side of the bike. Before everyone asks why, One, money is really tight, and two, I've heard a maxim running two to one with harley mufflers and it had a whole lot better sound.

Good collector boxes are hard to find. I would strongly recommend buying the MAC 2-1 setup and put whatever mufflers you want on it.

    PS What bike?

It would help if we knew what bike you're talking about.

We have an ongoing "apples-and-oranges" issue on this site, in this case because not all XJs have the same exhaust system configuration but a lot of people assume everyone's is like theirs.

Some bikes have a true collector box; some have a crossover pipe or "siamesed" pipes joined by a single crossover.

Chances are what you heard was simply an early Max with Sportster mufflers in place of its stock mufflers; a popular mod.

My bike is an '82 750 Maxim. So was the bike I heard. It lives 3 blocks over. And yes it has sportster cans on it. I thought I said Harley mufflers. It's pretty much stock, mine was a basket case and is nothing like stock now. I'm working on a disability budget so everything has to be made from scrap, traded for, or adapted. It's almost done and I have less than $100 dollars in it. So...I'm not buying so and so crossover, or 2-1 anythings. Thanks anyhow.

If you have a true 4-2 collector box (presumably for a Seca), sell it outright or trade it for the Maxim parts. Don't cut it in half!
BTW - the 750 Maxim mufflers are separate from the center joining plumbing so if your existing exhaust piping is still intact you should be able to connect the H-D mufflers right up.

Zap, I have NO idea what you are talking about. I don't have a seca collector box. I don't WANT a Maxim collector box, I have one already! I'm not buying harley mufflers for it, I'm making my own with 4" harley baffles in them. But that has nothing to do with my question. Please see post #1. Thank you

My bike had a aftermarket exhaust without a collector when I got it. Have auto turn downs with 4 inch drag pipe silencers wrapped with fiberglass. They work well, sound good. Yes you can eliminate the collector, but it does offer some back pressure so you may need a re-jet on the carbs. Depends on what size jets are in them. Some people have done exhaust mods without having to re-jet.
Here's a link to my muffler mod.

I don't want to eliminate the collector box! I want to make 1 and 2 come out of the left side and 3 and 4 come out of the right side. I cant afford the parts kits for a 2 to 1, so I want to cut the box down the middle, put in a 16 gauge divider, weld it all back up and mount it back with the original bolt in the original place. That's all I asked about! Not seca parts, not 2 into 1 kits, not if harley mufflers would fit and not if I could eliminate the collector box. Just if anyone had done it.

Mojo.... what most of us are trying to say is that most likely someone on here desperately wants that collector box. If you want to cut it, I don't see why it wouldn't work. But cutting the collector is basically eliminating it.

OK, I apologize to everyone. I'll just leave it as is. This is just the quickest, easiest, and cheapest way for me to get two into ones. Thanks for the responses.

He's simply trying to eliminate the crossover...............not going about it the best way (or right) way, but that's what he's trying to do.

"Cheapest" way is definitely to sell or trade the hard to find stock exhaust (if in good condition) for mac 4-2 system or some other aftermarket system. You might even make money.

And heed the advice on rejetting. My bike came with a 4-2 mac system (also no cross over), and the baffles were torn up. I fit it with some new, straight through perforated and packed baffles and it's got a good sound, but I had to up both the main and pilot jets.

    Back to the original question:

Cutting into the collector box and adding a divider will effectively "eliminate" it; at least it will "kill" the magic contained therein.

The bike you heard probably just had Sportster cans on a stock collector box.

Additional "tidbit" in regard to that original collector box: it already HAS a series of dividing baffles inside it, it's not one big empty box. Granted, it's not simply split down the middle, but Yamaha engineered some exhaust scavenging magic into it.
