I work in a heavy traffic area and with it getting in the 90's all summer I would like an oil cooler.

My old honda used the oil pan as a oil cooler like this.

it wasnt uncommon for the fuel to boil over in traffic so I wanna make sure this bike stays as cool as it can.

UK and European 11m Models were fitted with oil coolers on xj 750's ,

I have seen a few crop up on eBay from time to time.

Heavy traffic area is an understatement! It is the 5 O'Clock 500 from 6am-9pm daily. Almost as bad as Chi-town.

The 82-83 XJ650 Turbo seca oil cooler will be a bolt on deal.

Not quite.......a bracket will have to be fabricated for the cooler, as it is too tall to fit on a non-Turbo frame properly (the cooler needs to fit "lower" on the frame, otherwise it will interfere with the main wire harness bundles), and the hoses are a bit (almost 2") too long.

The slimmer one from a 550/600 should fit better; plus there were aftermarket coolers offered by Lockhart and Derale that pop up on eBay occasionally.

Or you could find a suitable "oil radiator" (like one from a '63 or earlier Corvair,) track down an adapter flange (between the filter and the block, where the lines attach) get some sexy braided lines and do it yourself.

Fitz - how would I know if a particular Lockhart/Derale would fit my XJ550? Do you know oil cooler model numbers?

Sorry, I don't know part numbers for those.

What I was talking about is an FJ600 unit, which is wider and only about half as tall as the one from the 650 Turbo. Since the FJ600 was essentially the same as the 550 Seca in the engine bay, it should fit quite easily. (See pic below.) I have a whole set-up from an FJ600 that I haven't gotten around to installing yet; all it will require is fabrication of an upper bracket.
