Well I feel like a jerk cause I only come here when I start to have problems with my bike. However atleast I come back sometimes.

My first problem that I am having is my fuel level indicator. I rode the bike nearly dry last weekend and when I refilled the tank the gauge still read empty. I feel like it may be crud built up in the tank that got into the sensor. Any ideas on cleaning that or if I have to get a new one?

Another problem is my instrument cluster. My left turn signal, speedo, and tach weren't working so I went to a scrap yard and picked up a new cluster. It was working except for the backlight and LED display, but everything else worked. I tried to put the two together to fix it by replacing the LED screen and the black box it is connected to and by replacing the backlights. When I originally hooked the backlight circuit up without the rest of the console it worked but after I hooked it all back up it stopped working and now the left turn signal doesn't work again. I think I may have pinched a wire or only loosely connected the backlight by accident. However the turn signal makes me think the little black box may be involved since it was working before I plugged in my old one.

Is there a way to put my old LED screen onto my new box?

I think there is a thread on this site about fixing fuel sender units. crud does build up in them and you can clean them the biggest hassle is pulling of the tank and removing it. Can help much with the instrument cluster sorry.

Yamaha did do a tech bulletin on removing and reinstalling the actual LCD screen into the Atari. PM me with your email address and as soon as I can dig it up, I'll send you a scan.

As for the fuel level sending unit, when you see it you won't believe it. A "sensor" it ain't. Think old-style toilet valve with the floating ball; except the floating ball operates a crude rheostat to provide the "signal." They do tend to get pretty funky and crumbly after 30+ years especially if the bike sat for a time with an empty tank.
