I am having trouble getting my xj550 to take fire. I have replaced the cdi box because the one that I had developed a crack in it (by way of me dropping a shock on top of it) I bought a set of ignition coils off of ebay because mine were reading bad secondary, and the ones that i bought are reading the same way. Please someone help me. Is there something that I am doing wrong with my multimeter or what? Oh and by the way my starter button won't excite the motor

Just bridge across the solenoid to spin the motor (sort the switch later)
Are you getting a spark at the plugs, are they wet when you pull them ?
Have you got a strong fully charged battery ?
Are you reading the coils with the plug caps on ?

    wire diagram http://www.frankjohansson.com/stuff/xj550/XJ550ElectricalDiagram.html
    roll mouse over componants cool
starter button engine stop switch in upper left of wire diagram put you mouse over the black connector and it will show you the connector under the gas tank.
3 wires make sure it is clean and tight. you could jump blue wire to ground to spin starter
    bike in neutral?
could be side stand switch, unplug the relay under the seat to test side stand switch.
coils and trouble shouting ignition system
    part 1.PNG part 2.PNG

test primary with meter set to 200 test secondary with meter set to 20K (remove spark plug caps (boot) first) , ohm out your spark plug caps it is not stated in the test.

test your pickup coils that is done from the left connector of the tci box . ohm gray wire to black and orange wire to black. looking for 650 ohms.
set meter to 2k range you will see .650k ohms
that shows on lower right of wireing diagram

Got a clymer manual ? Well the method for testing secondary there is WRONG ! Test by connecting ohmmeter across both HT
leads.. Take into account any cap resistance in the process.

What do you mean HT leads? I have checked it by both methods, by measuring ohmic value from the pigtail to wire and from wire to wire. Which way is the right way?
I replaced my tci with a junkyard piece but it is looking like it may be what is wrong

Primary resistance is measured between the two small wires. Secondary resistance is measured between the two big wires with the sparkplug caps removed (They unscrew from the wire). The sparkplug caps are measured individually.

HT = High Tension, the lines jhat connect to the spark plugs or as K-moe nicely puts it the 'big cables'. I followed Clymer and also ended up buying a second set I didn't need..

Then I bought a set of coils that I really didn't need. And probably am going to need another tci

Well I have checked over everything about ten times now, and can't find anything wrong with my maxim. Would anyone be willing to check my tci for me?

I will, of course, pay for shipping both ways.

how about the fuse you still using glass fuses? do you get 12 volts at the tci box red/white wire?
sidestand relay pull it out then try to start the bike make sure you are in neutral

xj55h. I have tried everything. And I do mean everything. My first mod was to make a new fuse block. I have been all over the bike with my multimeter.

I had to buy a new one when i dropped a big piece of steel on my stock one. I just want to make sure that I am not just beating a dead horse with a useless tci box.

have you tried removing the sidestand relay
do you have 12 volts at the tci unit?
and of course a fully charged battery that is not droping below 10 volts when cranking?
if you wish to send your tci to me I will test it start a conversation with me

okay i have located the problem. when I turn the key I am getting no power to the brown wire that feeds the other three fuses. Do i need to be checking out my ignition switch or am I maybe missing something totally obvious?

Oh it did work once the other day but now nothing
