On the XJ700N, the screws holding down the top covers of each of the four carbs are worn from people using the wrong screwdriver to take them off. In a perfect world, I suppose, I would replace them with stainless, hex-head screws... am I thinking correctly? If so, where could I get those?

I used stainless cap head screws. They look great and allow my T-handle wrenches to remove them with no fuss. Bought mine at mcmaster.com but they can be had at local parts stores. Possibly Home Depot.

That's what I meant to say, actually - stainless cap head screws - one's that I can get to with a t-handle wrench. Like these -

You probably know but just in case, don't forget they are two different lengths.
There is a place a few miles away from me that carries a huge stock of stainless steel nut's bolts and screws, I must have a mooch round there one day.

Yeah, actually I just noticed that there are two different sizes - after I collectively put all 16 of them into a plastic bag. I guess I'll be able to figure out which holes call for the longer ones and which holes call for the shorter ones, eh? Let's hope so...

Rick - I'll be there come hell or high water - I want this bike running and ready!

Not for nothing, but I visited five stores today and was able to secure 12 out of the 16 screws and all 16 washers. You'd think I was looking for gold or something! Rick - just trying to save some time and keep us from having to pull the carbs off the bike at all...

For all of the time and gas you burned, you could have had new screws and washers delivered from McMaster Carr. They are in our links section and, IMHO, are worth the investment since they are so stinkin' easy to use! Type in machine screw in the search on the left side of the page and your in like Flynn.

Some of us are still of the Pre-Internet Run-a-round mindset.

We don't mind leaving to go to the Hardware store for a shiny new lock washer, five minutes before the family sits down to dinner with the In-Laws.

    Dinner happens every night.
We need the lock washer ... RIGHT NOW ... I have to run over to the Hardware store, I'll be back in a minute ... to find dinner in a Casserole Dish in the refrigerator and everybody giving you those looks ...

What? What? I said I'd be right back. No. It couldn't wait 'til tomorrow.

    One of those kinda guy's.

Everybody who's one of those kinda guy's ... you know ... right???

I like the idea of not wasting gas, driving all around town trying to find something that will only cost me $3 while burning more in fuel chasing what might not be had locally anyway. Not to make it too easy, but do you have a link to the type and size on McMaster-Carr site for the carb cap screws? I just tried to "build" one, and, well I would hate myself for getting it wrong, and end up with 100 screws that I bought, waited for, and won't be able to do diddley with!

Hey Vet! You know, I carry more carb hardware (screws) in both stock and aftermarket styles (polished stainless, black ox, allen-head, etc.) than you can shake a throttle shaft at! Send me a note if you want the big list......
