Have a run through of the many diy files on the board, heaps of info. Or, check YouTube, heaps of guys showing clearly how to do what you're after. Also, grab a manual, very handy.

    Cheers, gareth

Fellow Aussie XJ'rs, I'm selling my 650. I'll place this on the for sale thread but with such a US focused website I thought I'd start here first.

After 18 months of bringing the XJ back from the dead, it's time to move on. Licensed, running and ready to modify or restore. It has new tyres, fluids and filters, a top end overhaul including shims and a carby (all four!) rebuild. Electrics are original with a new fuse box. If you're after a reasonably priced PCR entry bike, this might be it.

Want to restore it? I've kept all the original parts and no frames were cut, bent or in any way harmed during this exercise! Even the panels and the cowling have simply had plasti-coat applied so you can remove it and see the original red paintwork.

This bike has grunt and character but I just don't have the passion to keep converting her to full cafe or brat so she'll need finishing if you're that way inclined. Heaps of spares (see photos) and I'd like to move it all in one lot.

Looking for $2,000 to $3,000 - big range, happy to talk.

Hi. I recently accidentally purchased an 81 XJ750 Seca.... I was at a mate’s shed and noticed a bike languishing in the corner covered in crap, somehow the next day we were unloading it into my shed.
I put some fuel in it, attached some jumper cables and cranked it over, couldn’t get it to start but it sort of coughed a few times. I gave it a liberal spray of Start Ya Bastard and tried again, it roared (whimpered) into life for a couple of seconds. So first step was clean and rebuild carbys. Removed carbs, stripped, ultra-sonic bath, then jumped online to order carby kits...... that’s where the problem started. Where do you buy carby kits for Hitachi HSC33 carbs? After much googling I found this forum, I figured you guys must know!
Advice needed on all sorts of issues.
    I live in Newstead Victoria.

Hello Chops, are you sure the carbs are HSC 33 not 32 as far as I know the 32 is most common on the 750 seca. On the top right of this page you'll see XJ4ever he's in the US and will be a good source for carb parts, don't know about shipping costs these days tho. For the usual consumable stuff I'd stay with Aus' but in my experience XJ4ever will be good for the more specialised detail parts. Throttle shaft seals are sure to be needed if they haven't been done before.
I'll bet any question you have has been answered before on here, a bit of hunting around will find you all sorts of info.

    Here's a starter for you http://www.xjbikes.com/forums/threads/in-the-church-of-clean.14692/
    and another http://www.xjbikes.com/forums/threads/talkin-tech-various-thoughts-on-various-issues.14608/

Good luck tinkering with your new toy. And I suggest you start your own thread with what's going on with your bike rather than getting lost among 'Aussie XJers".

Hi Bushy, I’m not actually sure that I have HSC33 carbs, I’m totally new to Hitachi carbs and XJ Yamahas. Is there a simple way to tell the difference? Part number I should be looking for?

I’ll start a build thread for my unplanned resto. I’m still undecided as to whether I’ll grow a mullet, get an acid wash jacket and embrace the 80s styling or if it will get a sort of ‘cafe-ish’ make over.

Just be aware that the US carbs have the air/fuel ratio screw capped, so you can't make any adjustments. Unlike the Australian carbs apparently. I bought a set of the US ones and only learnt this afterwards.
I read that you may be able to remove this cap but risk stuffing it up.

It was capped to prevent adjustments affecting tune that would circumvent environmental regulations. The cap can be delicately drilled out to allow access. Everyone does it!

To the point where you wouldn't need to reject for pods and pipe? I just ask as this is what I'm about to do!

No. Pods and exhaust change make rejetting necessary. You will be lean, risking engine meltdown!

" And I suggest you start your own thread with what's going on with your bike rather than getting lost among 'Aussie XJers'. " To quote myself. After saying g'day here that is.

In either Technical Chat or Modifications if that's what you're doing. It's easier for people to know what is going on with your bike, what you have or havn't done. You will get a lot more useful feedback that way.

I challenge anyone to find a useable part on the bike recently advertised, I reckon the brake pedal is good to go. I cannot find a single other part worth retrieving. The last time I asked a seller to detail not which parts were unuseable, but to actually detail useable ones, I got told I was being a "troll".

If anyone has a look at this bike, please report back, as I am curious as hell. I do not think I would take this bike for free, hell, getting rid of the metal as scrap would cost me petrol money to dump it. Should I ask if the $250 is the pay someone to take it? Or shuld I suggest he use the bike as a boat anchor?

Hi everyone, I've put some new threads up about this on several sites, but thought I may jump on the bandwagon here to see if any of you could help me out.

I live in Tasmania, Australia and am on the hunt for parts to perform a full engine rebuild on my 1983 Yamaha XJ 900R (aka: XJ 900 SECA). I bought it about 4 years ago and while successfully doing several repair jobs on it, the XJ has reached the point where the engine needs a complete overhaul.

As I don't have the equipment or time to get this done I took my XJ into a professional garage to have the rebuild performed. They were optimistic and positive at first, but have apparently been unable (after several weeks of looking) to source the appropriate parts. I find this pretty surprising as they were very popular and prolific back in the day. Among other things, they can't even find over-sized pistons.

I was wondering if anyone out there knew of a supplier, person, specialist, etc. that could help me keep this beautiful beast going.

ALTERNATIVELY, if the appropriate parts for a rebuild cannot be sourced then I'd be interested to know if anyone knows where I could get a secondhand motor that has done less than the (very) high amount of kms that my bike has done.

Hoping someone can point me in the right direction!

Also here's a picture of the beastie (on the left) to let you know why I adore her:

I don't know if yamaha dealers can get the parts or not but have you tried them. Top right of this page is XJ4ever in the USA certainly worth an email to him to ask. No doubt shipping will add to costs. You will need to know model ... is it 853cc or the 891cc.
Found this ..http://xjbikes.com/forums/threads/xj-900-n-pistons-and-ring-modifications.40060/ but not overly helpful, maybe you should contact Malcolm Doswell via this site. Good luck with your search. And put this in Technical Chat you will get a lot more responses than just in Other > Aussie

Gday, considering the cost of rebuilding an engine, perhaps look for another motor via an Aussie wrecker? Or a donor bike. I reckon you are perhaps looking at a $2000 bill for engine work.
When my FJ motor burnt a valve I priced just replacing the timing chain and valve guides and it was cheaper for me to buy another motor for $800.

As the bike is not considered a "must have" by cashed up rose glasses wearing baby boomers, you'll find another engine cheaply I reckon

Hey Robert, you've come a long way with that bike, congrats. You used to be on here a bit when the project started, glad you're still around and doing well!

    Hi Jaedee2
I am looking for the various brackets/bolts/rubbers that hold the collector box under the engine. I have attached a few photos of the major items. Do you have these by any chance?
    Thanks

Hey Frank, apologies bout the delay haven't checked in to the forum in a while. Unfortunately the collector box on mine wasn't actually attached with those specific brackets, it stayed upright purely from the bolts on each exhaust. All the best in your hunt.
