alrighty. I’m attempting to split the cases in a junk-ish motor I’ve git sitting here so I can learn how to do the starter clutch before I fix said clutch on a good motor.

Question is. What size bolt do I need to press out the rotor off it’s taper?

I’ve read so much my brain is hurting now. Lol. Surely I’m going about this correctly following the engine split and removal thread. It seems to be an awful lot of work to do for such a small part.
If there’s a better way please advise

Joe , think a 17mm metric rod about 6 to 8" long thread it in onto rotor take a big HAMMER smack bolt a couple of times rotor should pop off ....the first time I did this to my 82 Honda CB750 thought the guy telling me to do this was smoking crack ....but he was right it WORKED ....

Thanks for the help. Cases have been split. And in fine Murphy’s law fashion the VERY last bolt that allows removal of the starter clutch itself stripped out on me. I’m glad this is just a test run and on a junk motor

Agreed. That clutch looks similar to the one polock posted in my thread, the joke being don't use a grenade to disassemble a clutch. Dang.

The parts will make nice decorations though. Maybe start a trophy-making business.

The transmission gears look salvageable. Hopefully the crank is too.

Wow. Never heard of someone splitting the cases to learn how to split the cases.

Well. I knew the motor was probably gone or at least had issues. I wasn’t concerned with ruining it so it is a great tool to learn with for when/if I do the same to my sons maxim
I think I have about 6 hours in the disassembly and Sunday I’ll have time to finish it and get a total time. I won’t be sealing it tho obviously but I’ll do my best to follow correct procedures beyond that

Then I plan on tearing it back down again and making a lamp/phone docking/charging station with it after I gut it out

Still funny to me there was no clutch cover plate or springs or studs left when outside cover was removed. Broken and chewed bolts and friction discs in bottom of the sump pan I didn’t find any springs or the cover plate though so I’ll assume the P.O. said the heck with it all and just threw the outside cover back on before he listed it

Just a FYI... I recently came into possession of a used compressor, after a bit of a tweak and some valve cleanup and buying a rattle gun.
All of the holding things on the XJ engine to make other things easier to come off is in the past.
Zzzip rotor pops off... Zzzip clutch hub nut comes off... Zzzip I mangle a bolt on the cam shaft... oops. Still all the other stuff works a charm. Love it.

Yes. A compressor and a matco impact is a must. Easy peasy once I had the right bolt!!
