Hey guys new to the forums and I am a new owner of a xj650, so 2 days ago I bought a xj650 1981 and it had this shifter issue, like when you are riding it sometimes it goes into the next gear and sometimes it doesnt like you have to tap the shifter to make it go into the next. The guy I got it from said its like a 40 dollar spring, he called it the return spring for the shifter. Can you guys please help me out thanks.

Never listen to what a previous owner/seller tells you unless it some from here.

It could be a clutch return spring, BUT
It could be the chain guide
It could be the shift dogs, it could be the clutch
    Etc......

    We'll help you troubleshoot

    David,
I know...don't fix what's not broken but you might want to pull the cover and insure the spring is good. Just saying.

HAHA i did replace the part with a good one thats why it started working.
But now there is a new issue nothing works on the bike the bike shut off as i was riding it and I tried to start it and it wont start absolutely nothing is turning on not even the horn. I connected jumpers to the battery and i checked the voltage of the battery and its 12.6 which is good. I am sort of lost

    Is the bike in neutral?
What is the voltage w/o the cables?

Take a old screwdriver and jump across the two post on the solenoid (it's to the left when facing the battery).
