When was last time you changed the oil, and are you using 4 stroke motorcycle oil? This could also be clutch related or linkage problem is your bike a Seca or Maxim? the Seca has an external linkage arm that can be adjusted .

If it's the trans, it SHOULD blow out of the top 'plugged' cap/breather, if it's become HIGHLY pressurized/frothy....trans takes an EP90 gear Oil, but I have used an EP/80-90 too

Engine and transmission use the same oil system, only the rear drive case uses 80/90 gear oil
Engine/trans, use only JASO MA-2 rated oil for your wet clutch and gears and starter clutch!

Oh not good oil should be changed between 1000 miles to 1500 , make sure your using a good 4 stroke motorcycle oil. Do not use synthetic oil this can cause clutch slippage and starter clutch problems. As to your oil light coming on the sensor has sludge in it, barring pulling it out and cleaning . Pour a few ounces of seafoam in the oil run bike but don't ride let it get hot , drain the oil and change your filter and put in fresh oil and see if light stays out.

No oil cooler + 100 degree days + (hard )freeway riding, I'd change yours every 2000 Maximum......or at least twice a year, if you don't ride much!

More than likely, there is sludge built up in the sensor. It's a float
