I had the same problem. Spray some penetrate oil in there ( I used wd40) and just wiggle the key as you push down on the cap.

Use air to force penatrating oil into mechanism. Just remove fuel tap so you don’t “spring” the tank.

Yea I ce done that for the last 24 hrs and nothing. I’m thinking the pins are not releasing from beneath the filler neck flange. Been sitting for decades in a barn.

WD40 is not a penetrating oil. It's good for dispersing water. As Xj550H said, PB blaster/Kroil

True but what can I say. My bike sat for 20 years and it worked.

If the dogs underneath have fused to the metal cup, you're gonna end up drilling the core so you can slide the dogs with a screwdriver.

    But before I'd do that----
    I would:

    1. Try picking the lock first
    2. Remove the tank, remove the sending unit, and see if I can get the dogs to slide from underneath....
    Drilling is a last resort

Agree with Hogfiddles , if you end up drilling it our , eBay has brand new caps with keys , bought one for like 11$ and is pretty good quality .

The 750 cap is a flip up design otherwise it would be a lot easier.

if the key turns at all, the tumblers, or whatever there called are free. as the lock part turns it should pull the dogs in and release the cap.
but, there's little pins on the lock part that fit into the dogs, once those bust off the key turns and nothing happens. the dogs are spring loaded to pop back out so if you try from the inside, you have to push both dogs at the same time.

How about flipping the tank upside down & putting enough PB Blaster in via the petcock hole to soak the dogs loose? Likely will take a few days but better than breaking something to get it out.

It's also entirely possible the key is not for that cap.

I had this exact thing happen on a project Kawasaki.

    This.

This is exactly what I did. It worked.

I used WD40, which is really not a penetrating oil. However, you can buy a gallon of it a lot cheaper than a gallon of Kroil. You need a fair amount of it to get enough in the tank to flood the lock.

The spring loaded dogs that latch under the rim were stuck solid. I ordered a new cap which I think is loaded on a hand rowed Chinese junk to get here. 3 or 4 weeks. Meanwhile I’ll get the tank cleaned out and try to fire it up. Previous owner had drained everything but the brake fluid so I’m doing everything to get it ready to restart. Really need a good stock exhaust cause I’ll have to buy a MAC or something similar.
