I just removed the e-clip and plastic washer from the throttle shaft of a set of Hitachi HSC32 carbs from a 1982 XJ650 Maxim that I bought online about 18 years ago. I noticed the seal was installed with the "groove" side facing out. Like this [< Both sides were like this. Is this the correct way? Most photos I see, show the seal installed with the flat, "solid" side facing out. Like this. >]. I find it hard to believe that these seals were replaced in the past. Which is the correct way. I've only checked the outer seals.

The open V side should face out on the original seals.
The replacement seals that you see in the photos are grooved on both sides, so orientation does not matter.

I did not know that. So, am I safe to assume that seals that are NOT grooved at both ends are the originals?

    That would be correct.

I purchased a set of seals from my dealer. They have the groove on one side only. Hummm...

yes that is correct for oem part.

do you have a question like which way they install?

These V-shaped seals are installed with their open “face” facing away from the carb throat. The OEM seals (HCP6838B) have one open face and one closed face, while the aftermarket HCP38B seals are like the original-installed seals, and have an “open” face on both sides (and thus for these aftermarket seals, it does not matter in which direction they are installed!).

The carbs have been dipped, boiled and related hardware put in the ultrasound. I've replaced the seals. Two of the 8 had bad cracks.
    I did notice this: 100_3094.JPG
    And this:

But look how the ultrasound took care of these screws after 21 minutes.

I did know about the space in the ring. The photo was to show the "tab" on the diaphragm was miss-aligned and crushed under the top cap (hat)
