I have an 86 XJ700 X. I have had mine up to 126 mph and still pulling. Foolish yes I don't do that often.
However I do like to get on the freeway rather quickly 3rd to 4th work out great for overtaking other vehicles.
What I don't like is that at about 110 mph the front end gets light and a little wiggly. I usually kept it around the mid 70's and it purrs. :)
After reading the specs of the bike and realizing that the US model was basically a F*** You to Harley for the embargo 1986 &1987. This is my own opinion o_O
I realized that Yamaha had just de-tuned their race motor and stuck it in a street bike, hence the aggravation of adjusting the valves. Less moving parts the easier to reach the 10,ooo RPM red-line
If you haven't done the valve adjustment on your XJ700 X you just don't understand.;)
I am not recommending breaking the speed limit either as this usually doesn't turn out well for the rider.

Transistor controlled ignition. My 82 650 walked away from my buddies 1500 kawi he is so proud of from 60mph up until he chickened out and let off. Somewhere north of 120mph. I only ever saw him in my mirror...

The upside of the shim-under-bucket arrangement is that once broken-in the valve adjustment periods generally increase greatly. 56k miles between adjustments is not unheard of.

That's great news cause I was sitting around 50,000 when I did the valve adjustment for the first time. I ended up changing 18 of the 20 shims. pricey I do have to say at near 20 bucks a shim.

All I know is what I have learned from others. Since that was the first adjustment ever for the bike, you might need to change a few again at the next 26k check.

1988 on Arizona 83 south of I-10 I was on my XJ550RJ and Paul was on his new ZX10 and he clocked me at 106; the XJ was naked but otherwise fully stock with new-ish Metzlers. 83 was such a fun ride back then. Wonder how it is now....

I had a new 81 650 maxim back in the old days. I race a friend with a 900 honda down the interstate. I was right behind him, but could not pass him. When we stopped at Lake Erie he said we were doing 112 mph. I never done that again. I met a guy that restores old motorcycles in my town last year. He was mounting new tires on my maxim and showed me a picture of a drag bike he raced. He said it would do 0-60 mph in 1 second! What a ride!
