So, my bike has been running perfectly fine the entire time I've had it (other than my jetting issue from the previous owner which was resolved) but now, out of nowhere, it's refusing to idle. I've cleaned the carb three times in just as many months, cleaned the air filter.

It started Sunday evening, out riding with friends and it would just stall anytime I stopped without constantly hitting the throttle. Nevermind that it was perfectly fine one red light earlier.

Do you have an inline fuel filter fitted between the petcock and the carbs?
Have you ever checked the fuel levels in the float bowls?

Please make this the thread for your bike so we can keep track of what you've already done.
Or if you already have a thread concerning your carbs I can merge them.

    Yes.

    Fuel is flowing freely

This is only my third post in several months and I'm not on here frequently at all, so I dont know the names of the other post. I had one asking about jetting, and one I was going to log a build of making my Maxim 700 trackworthy, which pretty much fizzled out of existence after everyone said it was impossible and impractical

Like, trackday performance ready. My family uses a Monza to drag race.
It runs, just wont maintain idle. It's fine through all the gears and rpm ranges, but if you aren't actively on the throttle it just drops rpms until it stalls

If you want to do that with your bike, don't let other kill your dream. Get the XJ out on the track and enjoy!

Have you had the bike long? Have you cleaned the carbs yet? Sounds like there are some passages that are blocked in the carbs and they need attention. There is a good thread call "The church of clean" it can be found following the icon in the upper right hand corner of any page.

Most of us weren't totally against the idea. We just wanted to be sure you knew that you'd be spending a lot of time and money on making your bike handle only marginally better, and that just a fork swap could make it handle dangerously.

As for the idle issue I think we need to get some background information.

Just how did you clean the carbs; spray cleaner, or full teardown?

Have you checked for vacuum leaks?

    Have you checked plug color?

Have you checked the oil level?
