When ignition(key) switch is positioned in the lock position, the taillights stay on. Turn key to off position, taillights go off.
No brake lights as of yet.

When ignition is switched to on, headlight stays on. I do know grip switch contacts have to be cleaned. Im used to having on/off, hi/low beams for lights.

Anyone experience these issues on the 82 maxim?

on 82 and 83 XJ750 maxims the headlight comes on when key is turned on. it goes out when starter button is pushed, because the headlight contact is part of the starter button.
The Maxim 750 does not have a headlight relay.

the park position on ignition key turns on tail light

there is a park and lock position on the ignition key lp.PNG looks like you have turned key just a little to far
incase you are not aware of it the lock position extends a pin into the goose neck to lock wheel at an angle.

    look at this link
Clean and lube the ignition switch

750 Maxims were made for 2 years in U.S. . 82 had Atari package , 83 had normal style cluster package. 83 also had the Midnight model as an option. 2 years 3 models.

You're used to older bikes or off-road only machines. Starting in 79(?) U.S. DOT required that motorcycle headlights stay on as long as the engine is running (this was phased in over time). The ON/OFF switch for headlights went away at that time on most street motorcycles, and were totally gone by '81 on all street motorcycles.

Yay, i have the atari package. Of which i can barely make out the lcd's.
An all mechanical gauge cluster would be nice.
The top surface on my ignition cylinder is pretty scuffed up. I can make out lock, off & run, thats it.
I have plenty to do to this bike before I put her on the road.
    Clean electrical contacts
    Clean carbs
    Inspect all bulbs
    Inspect/replace brake pads/shoes/lines
    Rebuild calipers
    Oil & filter change
    New tubes front/rear

Yes, off road & pre 78 im familiar with.
Thanks for your replies. Very helpful

And here's the thread about the polarizing film. Your's is likely damaged.
    LCD Screen

@chacal has new, reproduction, and used-good parts, including the decal for the ignition lock.

This is the shape the cluster & lcd display is in. Not bad but not as good as it should be. Speedo is a bit faded.

It is possible to fit gauges from a newer Yamaha into the cluster. I'd have to look back and see what fits without modification.
A few people have built custom mounts to hold the systems monitor and fit aftermartket gauges.

brake light switch on lever is just a switch making a connection. no polarity
clutch lever switch works the same. if you are missing the clutch switch bike will only start in neutral unless the connection inside the headlight bucket has been jumped
