    Howdy!

Just giving y'all a heads up that I bought an '82 550 Maxim as a barn find a couple of weeks ago, so I will probably be asking a lot of questions and displaying my ignorance as I work on this project.

Please bear with, as I am new to motorcycles in general, and I would greatly appreciate constructive feedback or criticism, even on things you veterans have known since you figured out Rule #1...."Shiny side up on any vehicle..."

I am looking forward to this project, as it kind of fell in my lap after looking around for some months for a starter bike...

Thank you, in advance, for your forbearance...

    Welcome aboard.

Please keep all questions and updates about this motorcycle in one thread. That will help us keep track, and avoid unnecessary redundancy

Welcome, lots of great people on this forum. Great source of info normally fast answers to your questions. The upper right corner has a icon for "EX 4 Ever" give that a click and you will find so much information.

After you get five posts, we would love to see your bike and what you are working on.

Thank you very much for the info! I have worked on cars and helicopters for years, but motorcycles are a whole new beast to me....At the moment, I have got it running, but I want to go over and replace/adjust/inspect all the major components before I go get my license...This bike was a barn find that was a barn find for the guy I bought it from, so I want to make sure it is as safe as I can get it before I go brakes off/clutch out....

At the moment, I am waiting on a new Hayne's manual (they were on sale!) so I can have the right specs/procedures right there when I turn wrenches...

Cheno, nice bike. Where are you located? Noticed that the speedo is MPH and KMH, and not just KMH ???

That's standard for U.S., and Canadian vehicles. Border crossings are pretty common. Canadian bikes get KM in larger digits and Mi in smaller digits.

Ahh right ok, I thought US bikes were just Kmh?
Speaking of Canadian bikes......I picked up a xj650 maxim yesterday which I was told had been imported from Canada! And as you say K-moe the clocks are Kmh over Mph .
