    hey guys,

Any advice on making sure I have the right butterfly valves in there spot, I’m 95% sure I did it correct but there’s a chance, seems like carb three won’t close enough... I know I know, I shoulda have marked them - I did with marker and a little engraving but can’t tell very well.... my fault.

How much light should they let through when closed?

    Any tips?

    Cheers!

you should NOT see any light through the butterflies when closed.
The butterflies should be attached to the throttle shaft when the carbs are separated apart. If your rack is assembled you won't be able to center them properly.
Insert the butterfly and put screws in but don't tighten, open and let the carb "snap" closed a few times. This will center the butterfly . Then with the carb closed tighten the screws with a little thread locker. After they are tight check to see if the carb opens and closed without binding.

any light you see should be even around the disc. like an eclipse but not completly around disc at bottom and/or sides

could be 2 reasons for that
    1) the idle speed knob is holding it open
    2) some other butterfly is closing first and holding it open
either way turn the idle screw in until #3 moves a bit, now use the sync screws until 1,2,4 match 3
now the idle knob can close/open all four at once
now forget the light, the little holes on the top of the carb throat is what you look at, make them look like this

That’s what I figured too, doesn’t come through right. Rack is broken so putting it back today once I get this figured out !

    Thanks!

remember that there is a carb that only gets 1 white washer on the throttle shaft

Figured it out, just took off the shim, now there’s a little bit of wiggle room on carb three butterfly shaft, Is that normal?

    Cheers!

    from xj4ever catalog
On the HSC32, carbs #1, #2, and #4 use 2 shims per carb, and the #3 carb uses only 1 shim. Thus, on HSC32 model carbs, there are a total of 7 shims used per entire carb rack.

The #3 only uses one shim because of the throttle cable linkage. The side opposite the linkage gets the shim.

I had the shin and the plastic piece there. bonehead move but all good now!

Next question is for the idle mixture screws, is there supposed to be a spring in them? Pretty sure there is but wanting to double check. Trying to set the mixtures and main screw right now. Getting a slow rev down when letting off the throttle but I think it’s due to everything not being set correctly!

mixture screw has a spring then a flat washer and then a tiny o ring.
