Xj900 1984 cam chain wear pad replacement

    Hello all, I’ve bought a old 100,000 km xj900.
    It needs a replacement cam chain and wear pads.
    Can this be done in frame?
    Or do I need to take the engine out of the bike.
    I’m a rookie on a bike.
    Thank you for any thoughts.

    Welcome to the forum. You don't need to remove the engine from the frame. But l am not sure if you need to remove the cylinders to get the cam chain guide out if you are replacing that on the tensioner side. The other guide will come out. Other forum members will advise you further.

    Both cam chain guides can be removed with the engine in-frame and removing the valve cover. The rear guide is held by a locking bolt on the rear of the upper engine case, and you will need to remove the cam chain tensioner as well (get a new gasket for it).
    I strongly suggest that you purchase a shop manual for your bike (either the Yamaha manual or the Haynes). Both are availble from their respective publishers online.

    Thanks for for the heads up in the cam chain guides.
    Yep just got an original manual. Not that informative though.
    I’ll give it a gone try weekend.
    Will replace the cam chain at the same time.
