Looking to buy one. Any suggestions or recommendations? There are a lot of them on Amazon in the $19-$25 range, and up. Not a pro mechanic, just looking for something to use around the garage and house.

Harbor freight. I've found it to be pretty accurate. Certainly accurate enough for what you are looking for.

I have that same one and it has worked extremely well for me. My main use is checking trailer bearings at gas stops when we tow the camper but I use it for other things as well.

depends on how you define "hot". Hot as in really "HOT!":), or hot as in PO'ed, in which case no sensor is needed.

I bought a cheap ebay one. Works fine. Interesting "infrared" is misspelled on it ;)

True story: my wife is always "cold" - we were at a science museum and they had a full body infrared scanner. Hot showed red, warm yellow and cold blue. My 3 kids and I walked by and it was red/yellow. My wife walks by, all blue/black. We never stopped kidding her since.
