I've recently rebuilt an 84 xj600 engine, it's the earlier model with different pick ups and alternator moved to the end of the stater clutch instead of the later models with has the generator mounted to the end of the crankshaft. Tested various components horn indicators etc removing them and contecting them straight to the battery and they all work but not from there switches which I've also tested and there also working fine . I don't have the engine in the frame at the moment, which am planning to do soon. Silly question but does the engine have to be in the frame and grounded etc for your electrics to work, thought this just applied to your Headlight, not very good on the electrical side of the bike.

battery should have a frame ground. possible battery connects to motor then a strap from motor to frame to make frame ground.

did you paint or install coated bars? that may interupt the ground for controls .

there is a frame earth just under the battery box, where the battery box bolts to the frame ,if its been powder coated, you may have to scrape a bit off to get a good earth. its a dual earth strap ,which also bolts to one of the rear crankcase bolts of the engine
handlebar earths are not needed on the 600, the components have their own earth wires.
might be a good time to change the fuse box to a blade type ,if its not been done already

The wiring harness usually has a ground wire too that must be attached to the frame.
