Recently I purchased a couple of 1980 XJ650's (in pieces of course) and both need restoring.
However, on one of the bikes, the engine number and compliance plate number are the same BUT the frame has the number N88 4912 P stamped where the frame number should be.

PPSR search has revealed no information and NEVDIS says it cant find any information.

I saw in this forum that it could be a NSW Police stolen/recovered indentifying number, but alas, at this time, they have no information either.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks for your reply,
As yet I have been unable to find out why a 07/80 XJ650 with engine number 4K1 000776 and compliance plate number 4K1 000776 is different to stamped frame number N88 4912 P
I'll attach a couple of pics and maybe it can jog someones memory.
    thanks in advance!
    Lee

That is an odd stamping, doesn't even look factory (not in a straight line). Do you have any history on the bike (previous owners, registrations,e tc.)?

    Thanks for the help guys,
as yet no joy with finding out more about the odd number and as there was no paperwork with the bikes, that makes it harder to track.
anyway, will sus it more keep you informed.
Maybe the UK style number plate holder could give me a clue.
When i punch in 4K1 000776 the net tells me its a XJ650 G model!
    cheers all!
