Hi there, I'm looking for a replacement fuel cap - only really need the internals as one of the slotted tags has broken, but if there's an entire unit available with the chrome in excellent condition I'd be interested

I have some spare caps around. I’ll have a look when I’m home Tuesday.

Brent, since your in NZ, do you mean the XJ 650 Turbo Seca, or the Xj650 that we call the xj650 seca (non-turbo)? (...also known to the USA as the xj650rj). If it’s the latter, ANY cap from any xj550, any xj650 non-turbo model, any xj750, any xj700/750/X, XV700/750/920/1000/1100.... and more, will fit. They’re all the same thing. Just make sure that if swap parts around, the key core cylinder needs to match the cylinder bore. There were different internals.

It's the non-turbo XJ650RJ. Ideally I'd like an entire cap assembly with a key as my keys either don't match or don't work.

You can take it apart and swap internal wafers to make them work. Does your key go into the lock or not . There are 6 basic key types for old xj’s. 4 of them most common, single or double slot, left or right. Here are. 3 of my bike keys

Key fits in the slot but doesn't turn - it's either the wrong key or the internals may be seized.
The bike came with three tanks, two were rusty & the third was good & has been painted to look like new. One cap was thrown away (yeah I know, that was a dumb idea!) & the other better-looking cap now doesn't work. If I can replace the broken tab I'll swap the wafers - but would definitely be interested in a complete replacement if you've got one.

Update - I just checked & internal keyway appears to be broken...

The last wafer hold the lock body in place if you can push it in it will come out

Success! I got it working again thanks, finished off with a bit of WD40 & it's all good.
Still think I should replace that cracked tab, do you have any spares?
Also, is it possible to strip the cap right down, I would like to re-chrome it.

I’m sure I have a good cap that you can swap out the key. Let me have a look today. Never seen that done as the chrome part is crimped to the body.
