I have a seat lock assembly off a 650 seca. the tumbler is missing. I can opporate the latch by twisting a
screwdriver in the slot where the tumbler cam used to fit. I'm trying to find a tumbler core assembly
that will fit into the open hole. Are those keyed cores common to locks on yamaha 650s and other bikes
from the early eighties ? If they are I could get a key made for one of the seat latches in my junk box and
then swap it into the seca .

The xj650 seca seat lock that I have, has no tumbler at all and can be operated with a screw driver. Yesterday
I found one on eBay cheap. It will be here in a few days. It has no key, but maybe you can help me with that.
    I'll get back to you.

I don't think seat locks have wafers in them (like the main key switch or gas cap locks do), they are a VERY simply type of lock (but it's been a long time since I took one apart, I might be wrong........).

They're incredibly simple, just take the rear cover plate screws off and you can inspect the gizmo and springs and see what makes it tick. Any simpler and you couldn't even call it lock anymore......

I have a bunch of Yamaha keys. I'll try them all out just to find the proper key profile. Once
I know which blank to use, I'll get some for the locksmith. He can cut the key from the numbers
on the back of the latch but he has no Yamaha key blanks.

pretty easy, pull the plate off the back by removing the two screws. all the springs and levers etc. are exposed
and are easy to inspect, clean and lubricate. One can see how the cam on the back of the tumbler operates those parts.
It's harder to remove a tumbler . I think you have to have a key.

Purchased a complete Seca seat latch/lock from eBay with a
tumbler and no key. I think my local locksmith can make a key
off the #s on the back plate if I can get him the proper blanks

Blanks should be easy to get. A big locksmith shop has them for $2 each Ilco brand x117,118,118,120. I’m grabbing a few to have on hand for my local guy that retired and doesn’t want to buy a whole bag of each just for the 2-3 times a year I need them

I have a seat lock on the bike now with no tumbler. I can operate the latch with a screw driver.
The latch/lock I got from ebay is complete with a tumbler but has no key. It has numbers on
the back plate (112) what do these numbers indicate ? The key groove profile or an actual key ?
The last time I had a key made for a yamaha xj the locksmith said that I was lucky, because he had
a key blank that would fit it " just by chance". So it seems wise to get some blanks before I go to
    the locksmith.
