a friend showed me a model airplane nitro engine that sat uncleaned for 30+ years, seized and froze up. he put it in a crockpot
with 50/50 mix anti freeze on medium over night. I couldn't believe it, like new. spun free and not a trace of the brown goo. now the goo is burnt castor oil but it might work on xj carbs too. anti-freeze has all sorts of things that are good for aluminum parts in your car. somebody should try this, i don't have any dirty carbs :) :( or i'd try it myself

Be careful. Antifreeze comes in many flavors.
I wonder what did the cleaning. Which brand and type did he use?

I'm thinking of breaking down my calipers and cleaning in an ultrasonic cleaner but haven't figured out what solution to use yet.

Used to love flying nitro airplanes, the cost of fuel $20+ a gal, and the change in radios drove me out of the hobby. Some of those nitro engine are even 4 strokes and cost $300 0r more. The fuel is interesting but I would guess the high temps and just the bubbles from the boil would do a lot of cleaning. What even solution is used guessing you would have to make sure not to eat away the carbs. Good luck with the future testing.

Using a heated power washer might do the same thing? I do season work at a cranberry marsh, they have one. It might be worth a try.

Lots of DIY concoctions for ultrasonic solutions across many different forum genres I frequent. Vibration and heat seem to be the biggest factors in general for helping the process along. I've had very good success with a product called Metal Rescue, but it needs to be used at warmer temps (above 65F IIRC), which for many of my projects in the winter months of the midwest and no heated shop, doesn't help much. But the crockpot method with Metal Rescue I'm betting would be a great combo.
