Does anybody know why there is a weight in the right side of the handlebar on 85/86 XJ700 and XJ700X?

If it is just vibration absorption, wouldn't it make sense to put them in both sides?

The slug is there on all the XJs. My thought is that it's there to provide a bit more stiffness for the throttle tube to move smoothly (less likely to get beaten up in a drop).
Truth is that only Yamaha knows, and they ain't tellin'.

I guess it's one more thing to add to the list of things to do once I invent time travel - go back, infiltrate the Yamaha engineering team, and figure out what they were thinking.

It could have even been something to do with expediting part of production and nothing at all functional beyond that. I can imagine a fixture being used at that end to speed up tube bending, maybe with a hook (cut off later) or magnet to expedite plating.
