    Hej guys

I need a little help with the wiring on my bike, it's a xj900 from 83.
I want to change the old speedometer to digital, but have a few questions.
I will put pictures of the original wire diagram and the new speedometer.
    My question are:
    1. Which wire or wires should I put together for the oil light? The original wiring on the bike to oil light is R/W and B/R.
The new oil light wire is grey.
I Am not sure where to put the 2 wires? (The number on the wire diagram is 41)
    2. On the new speedometer are there an EOBD, i don’t know if this should be wired to something? I can see, it's some kind of safety/diagnosis system.
    3. I don’t think my bike has this sort of thing, but i don’t know??
    4. On the new speedometer, there is a wire to “state of charge”? Should I connect this wire to something?
    5. On the new speedometer, there is a black wire to ground. Should I put it on the frame, or can I connect it to an original black wire, maybe number 43 (Black wire)??

I have connected the rest of the wiring like this:

New speedometer (Color) to the Org. wiring (numbers and color)

    Red(Battery) - 43, R
    Purple (EOBD) - ??
    Orange (L. Turn) - 48, CH
    Blue (R. Turn) - 48, DG
    Yellow (High beam) - 40, Y
    Grey (Oil light) - ??
    White (Neutral) - 42, SB
    Green (Fuel) - 47, G
Yellow and white (State of charge) - ??
    Brown (Key) - 1, BR
    Black (Ground) - 43, B
    Brown and red(RPM) - 46, GY

Good day and hope for someone that can help

Where does the oil light ground at? It needs more than one wire to function.

start with red wire directly to battery I would put a low amp fuse on this connection
    Black to battery ground
yellow /white and brown to the out put side of fuse (not main fuse) signal fuse

white neutral wire looks like it is marked- so it would go to neutral switch sky blue wire . I would use a meter to check voltage and confirm negitive lead.
same with oil light wire looks to be marked - negitive. this may be an issue depending on which oil switch is in a 900rk black/red wire.
if switch is open when full your good. check with meter

your tach wire has several options 1 of the is to primary side of ignition coil as yamaha does it so to the gray wire on primary side of coil or the orange wire

to mount the speedo magnet you will have to convert shaft drive to chain drive per drawing.;)

looks like you attach a magnet to the mounting bolt of the rotor you may have to drill a recess into the bolt

Thx for the quick answers guys! I appreciate that!
    I will link the speedometer.

    I will try the suggestions.

K-moe: I don’t know where the oil light ground at? I haven’t testet the wiring yet, which one of the wires yet.

Xj550H: Thx for the “guide” I will try that!
To the speedo magnet, i got a “conversion kit” to the wiring and I know, there are gonna be some fun work, when that is gonna be attached :D

when you hook up the 2 power wires to battery and key and the ground you should be able to take a volt meter and test the oil wire and neutral wire for voltage.

black lead from meter to battery negitive and red lead to the wire you want to test. with key on
you want to see a positive voltage at wire it should be a little lower than the battery because you are reading after the bulb .

try this so you understand what i mean by positive voltage . hook meter to battery red to plus +, black to minus-. you will see positive+ voltage . then hook meter up backwards to battery you will see negitive - voltage reading on meter
it looks like everything goes off of the 1 ground wire that you have.
wire to battery is likely for some sort of memory circuit.
with the 2 wires after the key for volt meter and power to lights in the meter, and other non memery functions.

the oil switch is the ground point (or should be).

with oil drained the switch closes to turn on oil light.
when oil if full switch opens to unground oil light.

only issue i see is which switch is in the 900. i looked it up and looks like your good it is the same switch as the maxims so it is open when full closed when low or empty.

the xj's that have the atri package for cluster have a switch that works oppisit closed when full open when low or empty

My curosity abouth the ground wire for the light has to do with how the switch is wired in the XJ harness. If the light just uses that common ground for the gauge he'll want to use a junction block to keep the wiring tidy and easy to hook up, or make a multi-plug pigtail for it.

    Hello

I try to search from forum but couldn't find specific answer for my question so i borrow this thread. So long story short, i'm building cafe racer and base bike is 1992 4bb yamaha xj900 and i'm struggling with speedometer. I want some "old stylish/simple" speedometer for bike but all what i have found from ebay are analog gauges. Are those meters plug and play or does anyone have some recommendations for speedometers?

    Thanks for help!
