    Heh all,

I purchased a 1982 seca xj650rj in New Hampshire a couple of years ago to replace the one I stupidly sold back in 1989.
Put a ton of miles on it and this year have taken her apart and to get her back in shape both mechanically and looks wise.
I am trying to find 4 header pipes and the two exhaust pipes in mint condition if possible. I understand the purchase could be a little pricey.
Appreciate any leads from you experts out there
    Thanks
    Gord

550 pipes are smaller than the 650....
    Smaller diameter
    Smaller spread,
Not sure of the collector end

BUT— I have some sets, so I’ll try to do a comparo in the next few days.

I do not think the 550 will be a satisfactory replacement.... we’ll see

Nothing like spending an hour or two fighting with headers and collectors, to find that - yeah, they don't fit. I suspect.

Thanks for everything guys… I’ll keep searching in here. My original 4 into 2 isn’t in bad shape … just the two middle header pipes have a lot of pitting and are seized on there. Tried everything to get em off as I was going to have them re chromed ( although the rechrome price in Canada is insane)
the steel wool trick will only bring them back so far- not where I want them to be.

You may find the re-chromer wont re-chrome them. Many will not do any exhaust components because any fuel residue will ruin the solutions. It’s too expensive for them to risk it. At least, that’s what they tell us in the USA........

The verry first step in that process is speciffically for that reason, "A chemical strip". A quality re chromer will do this step twice to ensure no contaminants remain, also any exhaust that has no color varances over the years, will be a double wall tube, "pipe in a pipe" to aide in heat transfer, this is why your pipes still have one color chrome after 40 years.

There is "in the states" a great company that specalizes in these usually turnd down services. @hogfiddles the shipping to and from them may not be as huge a cost to you being in the US, but for @Gord Vail it might not be worth the cost. But All I can say is visit thier site, and call the number....I personally have not used them, but have seen thier work and was reffered to them by a friend.

The other big issue two of my current header pipes will not come off…. Tried just about everything.

so perhaps the best solution remains locating at least a couple of header pipes

You may have to drop the exhaust as a unit, then remove the pipes from the collector.

You can do it yourself but it’s easier with two people.
    1. Remove all 8 collar nuts ( I loosen till they’re still holding by just a few threads each), and loosen pipe-to-collector bolts.

    2. Remove both muffler hanger bolts (at this you can loosen the muffler bolts and see if the mufflers come off easy..... that removes some weight and adds maneuverability)

    3. Loosen collector box retaining bolt part way

    4. Remove the collar nuts so you can slide the collars past the frame. Turn the collars just right. With wiggling you can slide collars past the frame tubes.

    5. Now remove the collector bolt and remove the collector/pipes assembly (May need to spread pipes to clear frame tubes)

Now you can work on the pipes with all the room you need
