Hole in muffler

    My 1985 XJ700N has a hole in the right-side silencer! From what I can gather, this is far enough down the exhaust path that it probably isn't affecting the way it runs very much. But I'm not sure.

    Would you:
    a) patch this (muffler tape / JB Weld)
    b) replace this
    c) leave it alone
    d) something else?

    i would patch it up with some of that exhaust tape. if that is the only issue with the muffler. the only reason i replaced my muffler was because it was rotten in places tape couldnt reach, even holes within the inner pipe itself. because mufflers arent cheap. replacing it would prob cause u 500-600 bucks

    I’ve had really good results with this stuff for that exact use.

    I think the XJ700N muffler cans are the same as the XJ700XN. If so, I’ve got one for you. Maybe you should just store all my parts for me!!

    I would clean up edges as much as possible put a little bit of rust treatment and patch it . I had a Virago that had a hole in the bottom of one muffler , patched it with muffler paste did what I described above .

    Ha! I bet you're right that they use the same part. Mine is stamped 1FG-14721.

    Well it won’t last forever but has held up for 2 year plus on two bikes and a golf cart. Prep is key, this won’t stick to rust but I ground it to clean metal and hit it with some brakleen before I applied it. It’ll fail eventually but better than $300 for a club car aftermarket muffler for a camp cart.

    If the prep work is done, the epoxy patch will be the last part of the muffler that's left. The metal around it will fail ulness the rust is not cut back to good steel though.

    Turns out that the XJ700N and XJ700XN share a part number for the left side exhaust can (1NW-14710) but different part numbers for the right side can (XJ700N=1NH-14721, XJ700XN=1NW-14721). I have not yet been able to determine exactly what real difference is yet.
