Do you have a set already, or are you without entirely? I ask because even a good used set will likely need at least some work in order to be reliable.

Before you buy another whole rack of carbs and get into the rebuild process take a look at this thread and contact @hogfiddles. He is our Carb Whisperer. You can start a conversation with him and he will respond pretty promptly. His work is first rate, you most likely will be able to put his fettled carbs on and go. That thread is an example of his work. The carbs in the pictures came off what I believe was a flood bike. He saved them.

    My $.02:

If you can live without your rack and are willing to spend some money for known great work, then @hogfiddles is your guy. I find it hard to believe that your rack is "junk" unless somebody dropped them off a tall building. They may need a good amount of work, but hard to believe they are so bad that they need to go to the recycler. At least sell them - they probably still have value.

If you are ambitious, as well as patient and well organized, you can clean them up and rebuild yourself. There are plenty of resources on this board and any bits and pieces you may need are available from @chacal (xj4ever.com).

If you want a backup set, you can keep an eye on eBay for a set. This will probably run you $200 or more and still need to be cleaned an rebuilt properly, so not an inexpensive option.

If you are a glutton for punishment, you can look for a parts bike with a decent rack, and then all the other good parts can be spares or sold to offset the cost. If you are lucky, the rack might be usable right off the bike, but more likely will also need to be rebuilt.

Send them to your local expert, @hogfiddles is your man I believe. Fit them and start it right up, warm the bike up, do a carb synch, tiny mixture adjustments maybe, ride it.
The alternative, unless you buy @Polock ’s set, is more heartache and no guarantee they will be any better than the ones you have. Most non specialist commercial shops would a) - be very expensive, b) - not have the skills or patience.

I bought a set of carbs , they were seized would not open throttle at all , the main jets were junk . The bowls were green inside , broke rack and did full tear down . Put carbs one at a time in a one gallon Berrymans carb dip , ordered new butterfly seals and fuel rail interconnect O rings from xj4ever. I had bought a rebuild kit off eBay this kit had carb bowl gaskets, jets , float needles more or less all you need EXEPT for the butterfly seals think I gave 30$ it was pretty good quality. When I reassembled, put new hardware in the carbs looked great . These carbs are on my Johnny Cash bike, and work great . I would not buy what you're being told , you can do the rebuild yourself , a few common hand tools and a few hours of time .

    Why did they say that?
Did they back it up with verifiable proof?
Or could it be they just don’t want to deal with an older rack?
