I am seeking suggestions for mirrors that afford greater visibility behind me. I have aftermarket mirrors (black) and am wondering if the stock ones would have a greater span on the stems. Could someone measure the distance from the outside to outside between the mirrors so I can compare?

Any suggestions for aftermarket solutions? Only interested in chrome rectangular unless they are quite cheap.

Turn your head. Also adjust the mirrors so that your shoulders are just barely visible on the inside edge of the mirror. That gives you as much coverage as is possible with any mirror, short of adding fisheye mirrors.

Always doing a shoulder check, but having trouble getting the mirror to just barely show my shoulders instead of a really good view of them. Partly looking to have a more convenient (read: more likely that I do it consistently when tired) view right behind me when I'm the last vehicle in line at a light. Seems to be where I always end up on my commutes.

I know the problem. Get a great view of my elbows. I bent the original stems on the mirrors down more parallel with the ground. The place where my elbows were visible now have convex spot mirrors. Better but not perfect. Hope this helps.
Ps if you benf stems do not kink!I

xj4ever has mirror extenders about 5/8 lift.
barend mirrors are also an option

the trouble with most aftermarket mirrors is they dont have any weights inside them. standard mirrors have weights inside to stop them vibrating.
i overcame this by drilling a 6.5mm hole in the back, and pumping some silicone adhesive inside then adding around 200 6mm ball bearings, after that bang the mirror into your cupped hand to settle the balls into the adhesive, then set upright in a vice ,overnight ,till set, add a small plastic plug, to the back ,and "yaaay" no vibration, or at least it will be reduced massive'ly
use slingshot balls, they're much cheaper than engineering balls:)

Aftermarket mirror extenders might be the answer.
